CGTalk - Magnet tool?

I read in the SoftimagevsMax thread that there is a tool called magnet or something like that in Max. If im not mistaken I have heard about it somewhere else too. So if this magnet tool exists what does it do.

In max, it's called soft selection. Just make a sphere and convert to poly. then go to vert sub object mode. the second drop down menu on the control panel is called soft selection and turn it on. Then select one vert and just mess with it and you'll see what it does. It just controls the fallof of a selection.

Well thanks for clearing that out, I have used only max so im not familiar with terminology of other apps.

and yet another piece of knoweldge acquired:)
