View Full Version : Are there any video tutorials that teach using the mouse with Corel Painter?

Yeah this question comes from the few video tutorials for Painter I've seen so far. They all are using Wacom tablets. Well that's fine and dandy if you have $300.00 + shipping + tax, and I agree that the mouse really isn't the best tool for painting on one's PC, but I don't have the cash needed to get something better so I'm looking for more mouse specific VIDEO tutorials. Are there any out there? Also are there any stores online where you could buy a GOOD, USED, UNDER $50.00 Wacom tablet that will work with later versions Painter? If so would you mind posting links and recommendations as to the type of tablet I should be looking for?

Appreciate it!

Wacom is the best brand out there, but it's not the only one!

I am using an Aiptek tablet with 256 levels of pressure sensitivity and it cost me only 25 EUR.

If you check my portfolio you will see that you can work in Painter with it. You're missing out on a lot of Wacom features, but everything is better than using a mouse, trust me.

What is it they say? Using a mouse is like using a bar of soap to paint with-but who'd want to?

I think it safe to say the answer to your question (thread title),
is no.

I, myself, would not even try it. Although, I have used a Kensington trackball for nice, straight, lines. (click to start stroke, shift-click to end stroke). But Fractal Design was advocating a digital stylus since the they first introduced the product (v.1.0). Corel has continued the tradition of bundling the software with Wacom pen sets.

There are cheaper alternatives to Wacom out there. I saw a positive review of a competitor in a recent ImagineFX magazine. Under $100. Shop around.

Why would anyone waste money on a tablet that isn't Wacom? Really, just spend the money; the things last for years and years.

A couple of years ago I nearly bought five used Wacom UD1212 tablets just because I knew there were people out there like you (an me too actually). They were on Ebay for $15 each. You had to purchase the missing pens from Wacom ($45), but since I still use my Wacom UD1212 full sized tablet, it was a good deal really. Check ebay is my point.

I have a few video tutorials up, but none for a mouse. If I can figure out how to embed flash with a little less hair pulling I'll do some more, and in a larger format too. Hopefully by then you'll have a cool, inexpensive, used tablet from ebay or Craig's List. :)

Well I went ahead and bit on this:
http://www.amazon.com/Genius-G-Pen-560-tablet-cordless/dp/B000KE3ESG/ref=pd_bbs_5/002-5435826-7138409?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1188517485&sr=8-5

I didn't really have the money to spare, and I hope I don't regret the purchase...

I did that too, and I did a lot of research into the used ones. I forget the details now, but you need to be very careful because there are the older interfaces, and Apple vs PC, and if you try to use adaptors and other issues, the tablets won't work. That is, they will work, but they won't have any tablet properties, they will behave as a mouse. I do forget where I found all this out - it's been 5 years now, but be careful that you are getting compatability. As I remember the UD models were some old Apple interface and would have the issues I said above even if you got the adaptor for pc. Somewhere in Wacom.com was a listing of the prefixes and what they mean, too. But there are always Wacoms on Ebay, it's true.
