I believe it's now customary for me to announce my participation in the challanges, only to then not actually do anything. :D

Hopefully I will break this current trend this time... I already have plans. This won't be like the majority of the other entries, in that I'm not aiming for the comedy effect, but picking up on the hero that has fallen from grace.

It's going to be a moving & poweful piece, as our hero is show catastrophically failing his subjects.

My friend Siku has just started working on some concept drawings, and hopefully we'll have some eye candy to show soon.

ok already! :wip:

Here's some of the character sheets from Siku:

At the moment we're thinking about the idea of our hero's powers having adverse side effects on his subjects.. something like radiation sickness. He's torn between his duty as a protector of all things human, and the long term side effects which this will cause; sickness, famine etc. For anyone who has read The Watchmen it's a similar idea to Dr Manhatten's exile.

We're still playing with ideas of how to convey this.

Another idea is that after battling a foe in outer space our hero inadvertently brings a super virus back to earth. It spreads like wildfire mutating and destroying all life, while he remains immune. He is faced with a catastrophy he is powerless to prevent.

His lower body (legs) looks like it belongs to some ballerina or something ;)

And seriously, I like the virus idea, very sad story for him.

Very very nice concept sketches, but I have to agree with Azazel on the legs - they do seem a little too thin for that body - even in a comic book world!

I hope Siku doesn't mind me bastardizing his creation:

http://www.moonjam.com/hero_leg2.jpg

I like the ideas you have behind him. Perhaps you could have his ' fatal flaw' self inflicted. Something along similar lines as "The Hulk" - in that a normal man wanted to make himself better so he could help others in a way that he wasn't able to before... only the result is uncontrollable, doing more harm than good.

I for one think it's a fantastic concept. Extremely "Stylish"............The whole shape from the tapered muscular upper torso to the legs flow perfectly. I like the exxagerated leaner look of the lower legs very much.:applause:

The calves still have great musculature,it's the ankles that really get narrow and taper to an extreme proportion. But that is what gives him that "Speacial look",It in my opinion really adds a lot to the overall look.

Also the flowing cape with it's ends swirling and then spin around the hero's torso is very impressive.Once again very stylish.Square jawed and extra large hands too are spot on great looks too.I really give two big thumbs up on this concept.

Being similar to Dr Manhatten's exile I would think the best route to go would be having the hero's powers having adverse side effects on his subjects. Being a former nuclear physicist who received near god-like powers in an accident as Dr Manhatten's story goes would fit in perfect with that concept for this character.

Perhaps you can throw in some high tech gadgetry like one of the minutemen Nite Owl........an extra touch for your character.

Well all in all I think the design is fantastic and I really look forward to the 3D creation very much. Great start with the concept, fun and stylish.

I love the concept(s) & sketch. :buttrock: Seeing you convey either one of them will be interesting.

I do agree that the feet are rather petite in that sketch, though. I like the small legs -- makes it interesting -- but not the feet.

Good to see some more non-humor in this challenge. :D

Well I finally got some time to start modelling!

Here's the progress so far. I've been working on blocking in the shape and getting proportions right. Before anyone points out the glaring errors with the muscle groups - I'm well aware of them! They'll be fixed very shortly.

Oh! yes! finally updates!

I like very much the style! One of the most superheroes! Like comics! :)

That's a pity you didn't post more pics of the progress, it's nice see how people work, and some wires ;)

btw, you did a good job on the light scene! Very cool presentation for a superhero!

Are the legs already done? which are the next steps? :wip:

That's just awesome Matt!:bounce:
Now this is one superhero who looks like he means business!
Way cool how you're doing his proportions. There's lots of character to his face too. Some crooks are up to something somewhere, but don't worry cuz this guy is onto them already..

I'd hate to be in the way when this superhero slams his fist to the table.

I said earlier,a very stylistic creation. I hope you will give him the same love with textures,he deserves it.

Also perhaps more attention to some of the all-important intricate details. The nut's and bolts type details,I think with this in mind he can be one fantastic end product/creation.

Very nice up-date,I look forward to the next......

Oi! :applause:

Nice work Matt. Coupla comments though - and I know you're still blocking out - but still....

I don't think his neck is quite wide enough and his head seems longer and thinner in the concept - although the head you have isn't incorrect, proportionally I prefer the sketch version.

The upper trapezius muscles also look a little odd to me from the side view, they should flow more into the base of the skull - but this, I think, is linked to the "normal" head size you have.

Also the distance between the top of the pecs (where there is a pronounced dip between the clavicles) and his chin seems a bit longer in the concept which gives it some elegance - I'm not saying you should slavishly copy Siku's stuff but I bet he comes after you on that one.

Err...anyway, I'll shut up now :D

I also think he looks a little like the Green Lantern to me facially. He especially reminds me of the one that Alex Ross did. Anyone else? (I'd just like to point out that this isn't a bad thing!)

Byeee!

Cheeky monkey.. you know full well I have Alex Ross comics on my very desk... ;) It wasn't a concious thing but you're right about the face. Actually I might use Kingdom Come for some extra 'influence' ;)

Thanks for all the other comments and crits - they're all taken onboard.

Big update soon. :wip:

when you model this in Max, do you start with a box and add details, or do you make a plane and extend/extrude ??
looks so good !

Small update, not had much time to work on it. Did a very rough skinning/rig set up so I could see how he's looking when posed, but there's still plenty of modelling to go.

Back on the first page of this thread you'll see one of the sketches Siku did was of the hero cradling a dead/dying child in his huge hands. There's something poignant about the hero trying to hold the child with his massive crushing hands, so I did a mock up here just to see how that could look. (with a Poser child)
The final composition will be far more dramatic.

Probably not going to make the deadline for this challenge, but I'm determined to finish him shortly after; both myself and Siku would like to submit the work for Expose - Siku doing a digital painting, and my interpretation as a finished render.

Simply amazing. I am an great fan of your modelling. It would be great to "see" more of your work progress, the way your model was being developed. Wire screen captures and so... Could it be possible...?

Cheers
