Title: Dark_Phoenix
Name: Rebeca Puebla
Country: Spain
Software: 3ds max, After Effects, Photoshop, VRay, XSI
Hello guys!!
She is my last character, Dark Phoenix.
This picture is my tribute to XMen.She dresses the typical clothes of comic book but for the scene and her face I prefer
show something of film.I did not like the fire because is too much saturated so I thought that to show the force and some dynamic elements around her would be interesting.
This scene is not realistic ,I wanted to do something with magic that remenbered to the typical traditional illustrations for books :D
She was modeled in XSI and 3DMax, the hair is hair and fur(very complicated!!), textures in photoshop, some renders in Vray by elements and other, like oclusion, with scaline of Max. For the layers and final enviroment I used After Effetcs.
This is the render but when I can I show the wires.
I hope you like it :D
Thanks!!
Regards
P.D:Special thanks to Guanny and Marcos for their lessons ;)

Awesome image! My only crit is that she doesn't appear to be controlling the debris (I woudl think it would be revolving around her hand) in the image, and I think you could use a clear shockwave around the raised hand.

hi Rebeca, I´m Logan!, Very nice model, compositing and color scheme. Particulary I love the shader suit.

5 ***** for me !!
I'm working with a plugin ( ornatrix) for hair and fur because i'm use vray too, but that make a lot of mesh and the result is not very good.
Can you share me your settings?
The modelling is very impressive too, you don't use Zbrush ?

Incredible work! The model, textures, lighting and particles are very fine! Excellent indeed! For those who thinks that Vray is just an architecture and viz render engine, check out this work and see the real capacity of its shaders and renders, logically putting it together of a talented artist.

VERY nice scene. I have to agree.... Thats debris looks like chocolate chunks. lol.
The model itself looks amazing, and pretty similar to the real actress. The hair looks very good, and the details on the suit looks like something made on Zbrush or Mudbox, it's hard to give poly this organic look with subtle wrinkles without something like ZB. :)
Great, Great job ! :)

08-29-2007, 03:34 AM
That's very good, Rebeca!
However, the lighting on her face doesn't match the lighting on her clothing. Her face looks more realistic, while her body looks more cartoony from the simple lighting. A consistently lit look will bring this image together. :) Personally, I would choose to make the lighting on her body more realistic-looking to match her face.
Suerte!

Yeah, I agree with a lot of critics about her :D I will try in the next model change these things.
The skin is not with SSS of Vray..sorry but I don´t like, it it is a little stranger, the hair is Hair and Fur of Max, very difficult if you compare it with Ornatrix or HairFX.
Tomorrow I will put more wires of model in other angle.

My comments are primarily towards lighting and compositing, the overal composition is a bit... easy, maybe you should have gone for something more dramatic, in any case, it could work, but then the lighting could use some work, try something with more rim and less frontal lighting, also, the head looks comped ontop, I think there's too much ambient and/or SSS, I think you should try to blend it more into the character, a bit more occlusion, maybe some red, reflecting from the suit. Then I would brighten the shadows on the hair, around the character.
There's plenty you can do with nice shadows and cool shading, and that's what lacking here, but overall, the character is beautifully modeled and textured, well done, keep it up, but don't forget it's all about the big picture!

It is a good work, however, I feel that the work isn't push to the limit yet. With the dynamic background, the girl pose is a bit "static" and not enough powerful as a heroine. I think the girl has no signature pose as she's like standing straight, her left hand is empty without holding power. And her hair and the sash at her waist, reflects something like wind billowing, not facing towards a storm or something powerful...
(and I suspect about the anatomy of her neck, that is not so natual like a broom inserted at her back.)

Her pose, expression, make-up, hands are very expressive. Modeling is great. Details in the palm, folds in the costume are just fine. The motion blur in her hairs and the extension of her belt is just good. Her hands seem a bit glowing esp. the left. The only imperfection may be her legs which seem a bit too thick compared to her thighs. I learn a lot from your work.
killer-instinct93
08-30-2007, 05:24 AM
Well I like that for once in a while I can at least determine an emotion/expression on a 3d character. Maybe the pose could be a little more dynamic or the expression pushed a little further, but it's really excellent work.

http://forums.cgsociety.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=117572
from this capture my notice about the neck structure is right, that is too straight. I think the body figure is too distorted, that lean too backward and the arch at the back is too exaggerated and also, her legs is standing too straight so her pose doesn't feel "approachable" or "too static" because her pose is not inclined towards the camera.
http://forums.cgsociety.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=117573
This is about her hair setup this time. I rather to have this hair that style like this, showing more dynamic, more comic feeling and really illustrating "Strong Wind"
Sorry to be that specific, as I think making critique is a way to train my appreciation (and also my eyes). I just think this work can push to the limit more and I would like to see a new correction of this image.

One Word "sick" Something is off about the boot though but great piece man.
Great job replicating her face, it looks just like the lady from the movie (famke i think it was).
I think the pose could be a bit more dynamic. I would have liked to see her leaning into the hand that she has raised. It would give her a presentation of being more powerful too.

Good job!
Just a couple things: the eyes look a little glassy and the broken fragments could have more interesting shapes.

I like the hair, without Zbrush.really take a lot of time do get this done, but i got e suggestion, like the camera angle and the detail of the rock. should more detail on that, and the colour mood not really tell the story , its look too romantic colour range. i think Marvel comic book is a vry good reference to get the rough idea done. Good work as well
Wow! nice model and your colors.
Congrats on the award.

Great work, Rebeca! I didn't know you finally finished her, and I must say the final picture is wonderful! I remember how you said some time ago you didn't know if you would finish it. When I saw your Dark Phoenix at the front page and I was really pleased.
I hope to enjoy more of your great work in the future :D

Outsanding pic !! Her face is pretty close to Famke Jansen's, and i think it's a nice idea to portray her in the outfit from the comic book. It give us a hint of what she could have looked like in the movie with the original costume, and personally i find her very convincing this way ! Great work !! 5 stars.

This is a bueatiful picture! There is one problem I have with the piece. I don't know how the facial expresion and character stance fit with the agressive colors.

After reading all the posts in this thread, sometimes I do that, but rarely.
The Lighting is great, But there allways things you can do diffrent.
A little more motion blur could have helped.
The hair is great, but there is something wrong with the left shoulder and were the hair is..
The image is missing something..
Awesome job, and congrats on the award

Thanks!!

I see a resemblence to Jean Gray from X-Men. Awesome just Awesome modeling work and I agree Hair and Fur is very difficult especially to achieve the premium work you produced.
Marvel comics may put you to work if you present this to them now that the writers strike is over???
Once again Beautiful Work.

This 3D art was very well done. Quite impressive to go back and forth thru several 3D art platforms, makes you a very marketable 3D Artist.
I too have trouble with Fire saturating a scene especially if it creates it's own light source like Phoenix does. The lighting is tough to master and control when it comes to fire.
Just for grins and giggles I wonder how it would look if you threw some dirty fog like dust into it but very little so use minimal amounts of particles and give it some turbulence with wind?
Please don't get me wrong I LOVE THIS art work, just trying to throw a thought or two out there for you to compensate for the fire...fire is so overrated, LOL.
Thank You for sharing with us.
