Title: 'Still Waiting'
Name: Oliver Lam
Country: USA
Software: Maya, mental ray, Photoshop, ZBrush

I wanted to create a feeling that this guy looks old not from age but from mental stress; that he has been waiting for something/someone for too long and has not gone outside for a while and not paying attention to his health. I also wanted to make his eyes still believe in a little hope.

This Project started in december of 2006. The whole project took about 6 weeks as I needed to learn about subsurface scattering shaders for the textures. It was also the first time I tried and complete a full image (lighting, posing, comp).

I used Maya, Mudbox, Zbrush, Photoshop, Mental Ray

great first time work. congratulation.

the skin is to reflective, and the bump not correct.
it will have more power with a dark background.

:applause:

Modeling is great, but the skin looks a little off, it's either the bump or the color. Tweak those things and the eyes a bit and your render would really pop. Its just missing those things.

VisionMaster2: Hey thanks for the advice. I was actually following you Vray Skin test thread for quite some time and your work is amazing. Once you pointed out that the skin is too reflective and the bump(probably too strong) I agree with you. I did try with a black background, but since its an sss shader the skin would be affected by it. I wanted to create a TT for this, and the white background gave it an overall cleaner look. I probably should go back and tweak the shader accordingly to a fit background. Give me some time and I would post an update in my WIP thread. Thanks again.

Guitarmunkee: Thanks for your crit. I agree the skin looks a little off. I couldnt quite put where the problem lies, since I wasnt using a single photo reference but a combination of them. I wanted to create the feeling that this guy looks old not from age, but from mental stress of waiting for something/someone for too long and hasnt been out or healthy for quite some time. But I agree it looks off, I would try and improve on the bump and specular first and see if that fixes the problem.

DanielAlves: Thanks for the support

Osbourne: Thanks for your comments :)

I am not sure if I can edit the post (even though there is a tab for the original post) because it requires me to resubmit the image, which I dont want. I wanted to add this to the description:

"I wanted to create a feeling that this guy looks old not from age but from mental stress; that he has been waiting for something/someone for too long and has not gone outside for a while and not paying attention to his health. I also wanted to make his eyes still believe in a little hope."

The eyes are still not exactly the way I want them, so I would make those changes along with the ones you guys suggested.

his skin is really lumpy, but it is a very compelling image.

monovich: I agree with you that the bump is kinda too lumpy. I would make changes and post it on my wip thread. Thanks for your suggestions and comments
