View Full Version : Character: Gaurd critique please
eMysfit 04-01-2003, 06:38 PM This is a character for an rpg game I was wanting to make but probably won't. This isn't the final version but its pretty close.
Please critique it and give me suggestions. Im going to school for 3d but Im not learning very much there and I don't like it, so Im going to start coming here for suggestions and comments.
When I made this render I didn't think much of it and I saw the axe is upside down. I can fix this easy though. Next time I post....if people seem interested and give me some suggestions, Ill try and put him in a different pose.

ahh dont dog your school.. they're all pretty much the same, you get out what you put in. most dont have game classes with up to date techniques anyways! even the specialized schools like digipen are behind. you learn it on your own and bring to class.... so congrats for coming here! best to take advantage of all that class time and put 200% effort into those class projects!
the model looks like a good start, with textures it will fit in a game. keep working on your traditional skills first of course, and improve your cg/digital techniques second.

I totally agree, here at work, we have real trouble finding courses to go on as we are all ahead of what the schools can show us.
One thing i'd suggest however, is to not just include a shaded version of your mesh, but a wireframe aswell, as this will shopw use how you have built it and a rough idea of the number of vertices you've used.

Thanks for replying. Here is a link to four pictures. One arms out w/ wire frame this time(Thanks for the suggestion Mattrne) and another where he is in kind of a standard gaurd pose holding his axe, also with wire frame.
MrHappyPants, I do need to add more texture detail. I really need to do something with the 'shoulder pads' and hands though.

And about the school thing....Ive been going there for almost a year now and its only a two year program. And Im in a 3d modeling class where our labs and projects are no more than, "create 3 standard primatives and postion them with balance in a scene. Render these shapes and print". I learned more on my own in a week than Ive learned there all year.
Now Im pretty much sticking with it just so I can put the degree on my resume.

well looks like its going to give you some deformation problems in the shoulders and knee area too possibly, i could be wrong.
way to many polys in the neck area.
weld some of those together and use some of them on the waist area. the hat is also pretty hi in polys too.
when your modeling a game character every polygon counts. try to get the most out of every poly. a good exersice is to give your self a poly limit, for example 500, that way you will get a better understanding for the polygons. also, you want a good balance of polygons in your character. if you look at your model there are clusters of heavy polygons. try to distibute those around. most game engines dont support quads they work in tri's primaraly, get used to modeling or triangulating your quads if your aiming for game modeling as a jog in the future.
dont let school limit your education, most of it is hands on and practice. also your peers. ask them for help. I find that to be very helpful.
good luck.

Thanks for the replies!
Ive been giving myself a poly limit....but it was really too high, 1500, this guy is 1462 I think. I should really lower it though.
You guys are absolutely right though, way too many in the neck and Ill definately have to work on the shoulder and knees.
When I get something Ill update with new wire and shaded views. Hopefully by then I can get a good host so I can post the pics directly in the thread.
I really hope you guys check it out when I get it back up to, cause you give really good advice!
