View Full Version : memory terminology clarification ne1?
singularity2006 04-01-2003, 06:08 PM just a quick question, my DDR RAM has lotsa diff settings and I was just wondering if u guys could clarify what 2,2,2,2 or 2.5,2,2,2 refers to.... I know the first number is CAS latency but what do the others refer to?
And did anyone cover bank interleave or burst length in that previous thread about RAM (i lost location of that thread).

singularity,
Please search through the technical/hardware forum for topics like...
bandwidth, latency, memory settings.
There have been a variety of posts already on this subject, and its been covered in great depth.
You've even participated in some of these threads :).

excellent, thanks!
btw, on another note, it seems that my memory doesn't like any timing other than default.... I tried the 2-3-3-5 thing but my system went haywire. It's now back to 2.5-3-3-6, which is the default. I tried tweaking the command rate, burst length, and all that other junk but it caused pretty severe instability. darn stupid mushkin.... i actually saw a benchmark result where they got the RAM to have higher bandwidth than 2700.... really shocking.

the overclockers law: there is no such things as a guaranteed overclock. just because some guy somewhere can do it, doesn't mean you can and/or will get the same results.
when you start tweaking a system you also have to start tweaking voltages, timings, frequencies, etc, etc. this is not something you can just fiddle with and expect to have working immediately.
before you even start, i'd suggest having a look at sites like
http://www.overclockers.com and
http://www.overclockers.com.au
jump on the forums there and read around to see what some of the more experienced guys are doing. this is not a newbie's game by any means.

heh, thanks for the nfo. I checked a lot of those sites inlcluding the one u just listed... it seems odd but not totally unexpected that my RAM doesn't like any modifications whatsoever. I updated the voltage just a tad bit... i think like by .1 volts and the system went haywire... so much for the Soyo being tweaker friendly... but then again, it might just be the RAM... but awwwz, it's 512MB of DDR PC2700 Mushkin!! >.< I tried each setting one by one to see what i could get to run stable but in the end, the only way to get stable was to use default everything.... i think the only thing i could change while keeping the system stable was the bank interleave and burst length.
