I'm fairly new to Character modeling. So would appreciate some suggestions, crits and/or comments to help me out.

This guy was done in C4D and will eventually have armor and such.

Thankshttp://home.flash.net/~miketche/wips/ogrewip.jpg

well if your first starting off its fine.

Its hard to critique people who are first starting off.

If I may recomend, try going to a program that is more widely used, such as maya, soft or 3d studio max.

I think I'll be sticking with C4D.

 good job !!!

but you got to work some more in the elbow area, make it more realistic, the thumb is in a wrong place it should go a little bit down, and work a little bit more in the desing of the armor, the boots specially.... :wip:

Exactly what are you going to do with this model ??? I mean are you gonna use it, to make a still image, are you going to animate it and make a short clip stuff like that...

by the way, is looking alot better now, but remember use one shadow light so i can exactly tell where one shadow start and where ends... I like what you have done with your project is looking with some more details, you gotta work something more at the top of the boots, look too plane, remember this is an ogre, they usually use skulls as part of their outfit... animal skins and stuff like that, ogres arent a civilized race... only in warcraft i think...well best of luck... :airguitar make him a little bit rounded... in the eges, try using a relaxer or something ...

roarty: thats probably the worst "critique" i've ever seen. though I may be a maya user, C4D has come a LONG way and is very capable of producing high quality results.

that being said, this is quite good for a first character. it's much better than MY first character was. i agree with Hammer Stroke: the model is much too square. Major areas you can improve on are the shoulders and chest. You can add more detail after that point. Take a look at concept art for ogre-type games, like Warcraft 3. Add details based on the kind of things featured there (not the exact ones, of course). Make the body more round (perhaps pull the center of the chest out a bit). Take a look at anatomy photos and then add musculature.

Good luck!

He's just going to be in a still image I have in mind.

As for the boots. What do you think needs more detail? The area around the calf or on top of the foot?

Anyone know where I can see some good concept art of orcs and ogres?

add some more detail make it look more like some animal skin in the outside... like fur... i think you should go to Here !!!!!!!!!! (http://www.blizzard.com/war3/conceptart/grunt.shtml)

get some ideas only, do not copy the characters ok... o rmake the stuff too similar... look at the boots stuff like that is what i mean...

What a useless comment I'd expect better from someone at CDIS, but I guess thats why VFS has all the reels on the front page :/ Not even getting into C4D propaganda, what difference would it have made if he had modeled this in XSI, it would still look the same since its the same person with the same idea same skils, and same artistic sense. Its a good model, especially for a first, lot better then my firsts waaaaay back.

My suggestion lies towards your next model, make sure to study anatomy while modeling. even if I'm modeling from two sketchs of a character front and side, I still have two anatomy books and a load of anatomy images off the wab to study ho the shoulder should connect, how the stomach hangs if he's fatter, alll sorts of things like that.

Oh and since your using C4D I'll invite you over the the C4D you sohould join in there, lots of discussions tuts and help.

Always good to see work done in C4D More and more C4D artists onthe front page lately, always excited to see new artists on their way.
