Hi,

I have the foundation trial still active on my machine at the moment, and now want to install Essentials. Am I ok to install over the trial version, or is this going to cause licensing issues.? Is the safer route to install essentials in a new location.

I could just unistall the trial, but uninstall never seems to work that well in windows, stuff always gets left behind, which I suspect will cause problems in itself.

XSI is pretty good with uninstalls. I personally would. However, versions (5.11, 6.0, 6.01, 6.02) work fine together.

thanks visualboo,

I think I'll go the uninstall route and hope for the best.

There is no reason to uninstall the Trial. The only diff between Trial and Ess is the license.

Plug in the dongle, and the go through the New Hardware Wizard to install the dongle driver.

Start the License Manager.
Click Edit Config File and change DONGLE_TYPE to SI0 (that is S-I-zero).
Click Save.

Click Manage Key Database.
Click Rename Key Database.
Click Generate Request Code.

Now you have your dongle request code.

thanks stblair,

I've just gone through this process with support. What caught me out was the need to reconfigure the licence manager. I guess that's because I had the trial installed first.

Hi Paul

Yes, it is because you had the Trial installed first.

Hi Steve, thanks for your help on this- I'm finaly up and running. As a new user the whole licensing thing seems incredibly complex, too many choices (and acronyms!)

Still, on the positive side, actualy learning the app is going to seem a lot easier now!

Perhaps it may comfort you to know that since your license manager is running now, you can keep installing new versions of the XSI without interfearing with older versions.

You can even run two versions of XSI at the same time, to check for a regressions etc.

Thanks Ohmanoggin. How difficult is it to switch to a new machine, is it a case of install the SPM and point it at the licence? ( my knowlege of daemons never got past buffy the vampire slayer)

It is pretty simple. When you install XSI you are prompted if you want to use a remote license server. Then you enter the node name of your system with the dongle.

Note: Not sure how your node name is setup, but the name you use is normally what occurs before the first peiod. Ex: mysystem.xx.xxxx.com would be just "mysystem".

Remember to exit XSI on the other system before you try to run it remotely. :)
