Hey Richard, well I think this one has some issues that you have to consider. the first I see, is the background sky, the color and the sund does not correspond to the highlights and shadows you have on the foreground elements, which I think you have too blury edges , I would try to work on a 16:9 Canvas , you will find it better to solve with composition, and it will definitely look cinematic and will look as a matte painting should be done. about the water I would suggest that you add a photo instead of trying to paint it .

try to loook for real photo reference so you can see exposure in photographs , you will get the idea on how to work with black and white levels. painting a sunset landscape is not easy , other than exposure you have to think about the color, if the sky is somehow orange or red you have to add those colors to the whole enviroment as well, take a look at this painitng from Albert Bierstadt, he did a perfect moody painting ( year 1845 )
I´m looking forward to see your process.

Hi Rich

I agree with Jaime on this, the lighting issues are standing out as being the main problem here. With your lighting situation, which looks almost perfectly backlit, the hills and buildings would become very sillhouetted like in The Bierstadt painting the Jaime posted. You also seem to be having a problem with sharpness and contrast. There are seemigly random areas that looks as though they are hazed out for no reason. An example of this would be the rocks to the left of the curve in the river.

Keep working at it!

Nick

Cheers guys,

Yep that painting is what i was after, you read my mind jaime. I have a reputation for doing dark imagery and I wanted to steer clear of it, but that painting has sealed my fate. I will look for a high res version of that painting and study it more closely.

Nick I never noticed the unsharp bits I will correct that. As for making it 16:9 good idea. I have started sketching out a idea,

wait out for more

Cheers

Rich.

Hey, I see some nice work coming out from here. What bothers me in this is the blurry bridge and buildings. I hope you make the edges sharp in the final image :)
