View Full Version : Character: Natalie Portman
Hi, first post. ^^
I've been looking around cgtalk for a while now, I thought I'd post my first head model from reference that I'm working on. If you can recognise her, then hopefully I'm on the right track.

Some comments would really help me out.
I'm working on the rest of the head/neck atm.
Thanks :buttrock:

wow:buttrock: this is absolutely the best 3d natalie I have ever seen
crits..... none
requests... wires maybe :D
Hi, glad you like it. :D
Here's a wire:

Not too pretty, too much geometry I feel, so it's hard getting smooth surfaces now. But this was a real learning process and I thought I'd just keep going.
Thanks.

Agreed! :D
Although the inner corner of the eye with the meaty bit seems a bit too big (noticiable in the third image), try scaling it down vertically, imho ;)

I don't think that could look any more like Natalie. I think it's perfect as it is. I can't wait to see the final product! Please please please keep us updated.

Finally, a Portman face model that still looks like her without the textures... Great job... no crit's here.
Hi, thanks for all your comments, I'll work on the points you've mentioned.
Here's the current state of the model, with modelling the rest of the head comes a load more tweaking. Let the tweakage begin. :D

I'm re-profiling the nose a bit as well to match up with the references I'm using.

Very nice indeed, I recognised her right away :)

where did you get your reference pictures from? or are you just "winging" it? having a hard time finding side shots.
Hi, thanks for the positive feedback, much appreciated :D
Here's some front and side renders of the full head. Warning: Dodgy texture job! Eyebrows are copy and paste from my old black and white texture...^^; Textures are uber WIP.

(need to sort out the lack of polys at the top of the head too. )
Doodler46, I used reference shots from fineart.sk as well as some from natalieportman.com.

Aye, I've noticed this too...I think it's something todo with the cheek area near the corner of the eyes, maybe. I'm not all too sure.
Sorting out the nose atm.

ya its the cheeks they are a little too puffy
That's a good likeness of Portman:airguitar. I agree pretty much with the points the others made, Ad B. To me, she's a little wide in the face. Keep at it.:)
Something important about that last render....
It looks like you've used the Natalie Portman photos from fineart.sk as reference, as regards to that, please note that Andrew Camenisch (now working @ WETA ;) of the Human Head Project site, says:
Notice the profile view is NOT a true profile. The head is slightly angled away. Students who have used these images struggled against placing the eyes on their models too far forward.
See:
http://coldfusion.art.msstate.edu/camenisch/thehumanhead/setup.html
Also see Gnarly's guide for some great notes on setting up references, esp with reguards to profile views. http://www.logrhythms.com/Leah/tuts/BH01.html
otherwise, good work!!
Regarding the reference for the profile, I did notice this too. But I couldn't find any other side profile that was usuable really. :/
It's weird...because everything lines up between the two photos( although the eyebrows trick me out). So I sort assumed that they were quite close to the same angle of tilt.
The ears line up at the top of both shots, but because of perspective on the first shot that's a problem I guess. But I'll have to guestimate somewhat to place the side ear to the middle of the front ear, since I can't see the bottom of the front ear! ^^
Thanks for the links too. :D
I have an alternative profile pic on my webspace, *but there's a bit of a tilt on the head too, to the other side this time, doh! :p
Ahh well, just to increase ur Natalie Portman pics collection anywayz: ;) http://users.bigpond.net.au/sequel/reference/natalie_portman912035.jpg
Thanks :D
And  @ her ear.
I'll try and get the model to be somewhat more accurate with a bit more tweakage.

I think it's EXCELLENT. I can't imagine anyone not knowing who it is.
I don't think we should make any critiques without your references tho. Maybe just post ONE front and ONE side profile image. The first black/white image is perfect from what I can tell without reference. The skin colored images look diff. now. Especially the side profile. I've never really seen Natalie from the side tho. So I can't really say anything without reference... and as she gets older and older I'm sure her face gets different... more puffy as she gains and loses weight. So we need to see your references.
Maybe... what we can safely do is just say if it looks good or not. That's easy enough. And this DOES look good... very good. But I'm not gonna nitpick without some ref. to back it up. Cheers...

Looks good. Whats software are you using? 3dsmax?
Hi, thanks for you comments.
Here's an update, I've tried to compensate for the tilt I had before, how's it looking?
http://www.totalff.com/nat41.jpg
I'll start spiffing up the textures when I'm happy with the geometry. Eyebrows. zo/
DiLapper, I'm using Lightwave 3D.

you need to make her cheeks a little more slender and you should be good to go

Excellent, nostrils a touch too wide/pronouced perhaps?
On the whole though, great likeness!:)

Great work! 3 crits:
-the nose seems way to thin and pointy, whereas in the picture it is a little thiker and rounder.
-Maybe it's just me, but the head looks way to thick in the profile view, it doesn't look quite her age (think silhouette of head profile)
-lastly, the defining line (the outer edge) of jaw bone seems a bit too masculine (maybe its too far forward, or maybe it is sinking in before it gets to the edges, in which case make her cheeks more puffy in the side view and not so much in front view.)
Hope this helps, looking good.:p

curve it a liitle more as you go from the cheek to the chin, that line is too straight compared to the front view pic you posted

thats a dead on lookin model, its pretty hard to crit :) with hair, she'll look spectacular!

Yea.. that's what I say. It looks fine. She's so young I'm sure her face looks a little different every year.
HAIR.. now there's something tuff. Why don't people make some suggestions on diff. methods to use.

The cheeks are too poofy.
I know there's a white line near her nose in the profile view you've got... but don't assume that's the edge of a curve. It's a highlight. People's cheekbones don't actually thrust forward that much-- in a profile view, you can always see all of the skin that flows up from the cheekbone to the nose, it does NOT ever get quite perpindicular to the profile, much less curve back in again next to the nose. This poofiness has given her face a weird flat kinda squashed look, the area around the nose and mouth is a bit odd looking. Toning down the cheeks could probably help-- use some perspective reference shots, and find more profile photos if you can!

Hmmm... well put. I guess this is really a question of to what degree of accuracy do you want to shoot for. But I do see what you mean about how strange the profile shot can seem with the cheeks.

hey zoo, ya gonna ask to use her for the starwars project?:D

Oh yea... if we can. The model is officially donated but it depends of course on how quickly it's finished. And if it works out we'll find a spot for it somewhere or create a shot for it... so we can show off the nice work and get the authors names in the credits.

I think out of all the Natalie Portman models I have seen around this is the best one by far.
Very,Very well done.
Keep up the good work.

Yeap, Nathalie is probably the celebrity I've seen done in 3D the most often. Most of the time, the likeness wasn't obvious, but this time it's really good. Actually, I really like the two first pics

where is the rest :-)
So far, the best Natalie Portman I have seen.
You caught the main characteristics of the face. Impressive.
Go on

Hi i think the head is spot on at least from the front view. i know somone else mentioned the problem with the first side reference image you chose and thats the only problem i spotted as well. I am an intermediate and most of my work revolved around dynamics and scripted animation. I am trying to model my first head, and i too was trying to do Natlaie Portman. I was wondering if i you would be willing ot share you head with me. So that i could see how it was constructed and use it sort of like a template. I found that looking at the construction of other peoples works is a great way to learn. Thats how i learned how to contruct shaders. Anyways it would be really cool if i could have a copy of your head. I wouldn't use it all, because i really want to build one all by myself. But a copy of your head would help a lot. thanks and keep up the great work.
