View Full Version : How to build PC for real time compositing and editing?
modology 08-27-2007, 03:47 AM I'm trying to build myself a new PC dedicated for compositing and editing video as real time speed as possible. Does anyone know any Hardware that will allow me to do editing and compositing in real time? Software that I will use is SHAKE or NUKE. Thanks alot

the only real time compositor out there is Motion. You can use motion with a plugin called "conduit" for a more shake-like experience, but it still is lacking in professional features and gets bogged down when you string more than 4/5 effects together.
Shake will never be real time on any box. Your best bet with a shake pipeline is to get access to a huge renderfarm and trade slow compositing for fast rendering.
Nuke is very interactive, way better than Shake - but not even close to real time.
Even if you had an 8 proc box with a sick video card, you're still in for a surprise. Compositing is slow.
I think you'd get the best results from After Effects teamed with Nucleo on a fast dual or quad system with a lot of RAM and a small renderfarm. That's the most flame like interactivity that I've see as of yet. It smokes.

a fast raid array is going to make the biggest difference in speed with your compositor. Get an 8-16 disk sata array. That will help a lot with editing/compositing.
What app are you using for editing?
