View Full Version : -WIP- Lava Monster
Whirlwind 04-01-2003, 10:10 AM Here's something I've been working on here and there. The texture is still a WIP so I'm open to adivce. Sorry about not being able to direct link, I had to drop my site for now because of lack of money and had to opt for a free one.
Crits welcomed.

Hi!
Nice model, but I like the design better.... :)
Maybe you could sacrifice some poly count to have some magma plates stand out from the model, geometrically, like in the drawing...?
Hope this helps...
Cheers,
- Jonas
Hey whirl - I like the concept. You might try to vary up the glow in the hard mass for better definition and depth, and if you're not going to animate the face, paint in the scowling eyes. They really make the face in the concept. Keep at it!

Thanks for the crits.

I actually have certain rock shapes in the contour of my model, but I completely overlooked them when texturing, so they don't stand out as much. I'll definately go back and fix that so the jutting rocks stand out more. Thanks for pointing it out.

I'll redo the eyes as suggested to help with the face. I agree that right now alot of charcter is lost because of the shapeless eyes my model currently has.
I'll post an update soon, thanks again.

Fixed the eyes and some of the texture issues. As far as adding more geometry, I'm afraid I'm past that point. I'll just learn from my mistakes and move on. I agree, that more rocks stand out would have helped.

lol duuuuuuude...
i've had this idea too.
what i think would make him better is
make him a bit more "melting" instead of
human form. like make the "groin" point
lower so the legs are shorter.
also, you could try elongating the torso.
make the eyes narrower to add that evil look.
that's all my suggestions.
good job tho.
EDIT:
and add more contrast to make it look like the concept!

I like it, it's a bit different in some way.. Awesome work nevertheless! :)

I really dig him, but I think you should try to remove those black shades from the yellow parts in the render. Self illumination or the ambient on white can maybe help, archieving the right effect.

Worked on the texture more and also fixed some minor deformation problems with the model. He is completely rigged with some minor facial expressions. Animation and background in the works. Still open to advice.
Thanks again for the crits thus far,

try to make the only-lava part of the leg cave in so it
looks stretched out or something.
but this is beautiful! much better!
i love your work! :applause:

Dudes! Where'd you get the idea for a lava monster from?? 'Cause I got a movie quote here for ya!
I was on the show in '82, episode 81. Got killed by the lava monster before the first commercial. Aargh!He-he-he... ;)
Cheers,

Would that be Galaxy Quest?

Thank you :)

Not sure where I got the idea from, the concept itself is relatively old, just dug it up and started modeling. Where did that quote come from? :D
Oh yes, general information I forgot to mention:
-Lava Monster-
2045 tris
(2) 512 by 512 texture maps, One for color, one for glow.

I have come to understand most of the other textures but have yet to experiment with "glow" can you please post a watermarked version ok each and possibly explain how you do it? it would help me a ton. Great job dude :) -Jeremy-

Heh heh, ah yes. Its been awhile since I've seen that.
-Roach[MFX]-
Basically the glow map works the same as an alpha matte. White being what glows, black not. I just work on two seperate layers in photoshop and color them both as I go.
I'm still hosting on a free service which limits my posting of images.. :( but I'll attach a smaller version here for you.
Hope this helps, if not just drop me a line and I'll try my best to further explain. Oh, to get the glow exactly how it is, I had to tweak Maya's Shaderglow material which is a whole different can of worms.
My that is a bad saying...

Whats the poly count on this?
If it's quite low you could put it into Neverwinter Nights, then evertone can have the benifits of it.

Very nice indeed!
Is it for a specific game/engine or just for fun ?

Its currently 2045 tris, I think thats alittle much for Neverwinter Night. Thanks though :)
-Roach[MFX]-
Glad I could help.
-ckaos@om-
Thanks as well. I'm currently revamping my reel, this is just a part of it.
Started finishing out the background, still have some tweaks to go, but I'm happy so far. Crits greatly welcomed as always.

Looking good! :)
I'm just wondering if the mesh is a bit more dense then it really needs to be?

Thanks.
It is good possiblity. Where would you suggest I lighten the mesh? :)

Nice monster!I want to give it a hug!!
Is it possible, with the particle effects, just make it looks like it is burning and giving out smokes just like that "red hot burning monster" in the Fellowship of the ring(I understand that is not a lava monster)? But I think it would be quite difficult to achieve.
When I see that monster in the movie Im amazed.Because it looks really hot that I dont really want to touch it...
