Well i user Hypercam for all my video screencap. Its not a freeware, but u can download a trailversion where it leaves a small overlay on the corner without disturbing. you may use it as an evaluation version till u need.

else there is always a freeware version of another screencap softwarecalled "Wink" which i use... which gives output in flash unlike "hypercam".

hope that was useful

Camtasia is without a doubt the best. if your using it for blogs and such instead of your reel, I'd also recommend Techsmith's new app which is currently free (and their currently hosting videos for free too) Jing http://www.jingproject.com/

It makes capturing easy, saves it as a swf instantly with the play bar making it super easy to embed and since they have the free hosting, you can have it upload automatically, and it stores a link in your clipboard to make it easy to post on a forum or IM etc. I still use camtasia for all my higher level production that requires editing and such such as my reel and online training videos, but for my blog its so much faster and easier.

Camtasia's good but I don't like how it can't capture hardware accelerated viewports (this may have been rectified recently).
Out of the free programs, I like camstudio a lot but I don't like having to use their movie player the show the best looking result.
I've started using debut (http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/index.html) and it works quite nicely as well. Gotta fiddle with the codec settings a bit to get right balance of speed and quality, but free is free.

camtasia has been capable of capturing hardware accellerated viewports for about 4 or 5 years now. Heck micorsoft did all their MSDN videos for vista and vista beta's using camtasia too, and if it can work with vista displays thats pretty damn good considering most 3d apps don't :D
