View Full Version : Maya on a Sony VAIO GRV7P notebook?

I'm looking at buying the Sony VAIO GRV7P notebook pc which is a 2.6ghz P4 with an ATI Radeon 9000 video card. The display size is 1600 x 1200. How well would Maya 4.5 run with such a card? I realise it wouldn't be as good as the Quadro 4 card in the Dell M50 notebook, but would it be good enough? My main reasons for choosing the Sony over the Dell are the DVD writer, faster processor and cheaper price.

I'm currently running Maya 3 on a dual 850mhz PIII with a Wildcat 4005 card which is quite old now. It's not so bad. But of course I'd need to purchase a new copy of Maya 4.5 for the Sony.

what. how could you even ask that kind of a question.
of course maya will work fine.
unless Maya has a grugde against sony vao's then it should work just fine.

one of my friends is running Maya 4.5 perfectly fine and he has a.

compaqu laptop with a 1.3 ghz (amd I think) I dont know the video card. I am sure that it is one of these crapy no namers. and he is running win xp home. and the cooling sucks like crap.

Ok, that's cool, thanks. I wasn't sure. Back when I bought my old system with Maya 3, I was told that you'd need a decent graphics card. Oxygens were popular, as were the Fire GL cards etc.

But from what I've read the ATI Radeon 9000 is essentially a gaming card, but a good one at that.

So your friend gets pretty decent shaded realtime graphics running Maya on his laptop? I remember running a trial version of 3.0 on my old PIII 750 laptop and it wasn't too bad. A bit too slow for paint fx though.

hi,
I am running maya 4.5 on a sony vaio grx316g. Display is 1600x1200 on a ati radeon 7500 32mb.

it runs good but it could be faster when using a single viewport (pane).

when you purchase your vaio tell me if you are satisfied... because i am thinking about upgrading.

how much video memory does it have?

i recently bought an HP 2.4ghz laptop with a 32meg video card, a ATI I believe. Maya works, but it doesn't take much to prevent me from maximizing the veiwports. it works fine if i keep it side by side, so it's not the end of the world, but if i could do it over i would get a laptop, no matter what brand, with the most video memory possible.

Actually, I've come accross a more powerful and cheaper notebook than the Sony. It's a Sager and uses a normal pc P4 3.06ghz Hyperthreading cpu. Another added bonus is that it's ATI Radeon 9000 card has 128mb of video memory which is double that of the Sony. So I'd expect it to perform quite well?

Here's the url: http://www.sagernotebook.com/pages/notebooks/product2.cfm?ProductType=8887&SubType=V
This notebook has so much to offer. There's a tv tuner with remote, built in floppy, optional DVD writer, full size keyboard with keypad, space for 2x 60gb hard drives, 4 USB 2.0 ports which can be used for external hard drives etc, SD card removable mp3 player, memory stick slot, 533mhz buss, 1024mb ram as standard, and even a scroll wheel on the touch pad. Very impressive specs! Of course it weighs more than other notebooks due to the 3.06ghz processor and everything else they've crammed in there. I wouldn't expect it to run off a battery for too long either.

I have an alienware area 51.
I thought that these were the most expensive. but I was just talking to a girl the other day and she had bought a laptop a bit less powerfull then mine.
I have a p4 1.39 ghz I believe with 1 gig ram 40 gig hard drive. and an ati video card( I can't remember witch one. but I am pretty sure that it has 64 megs of mem.)
and I got that well over a half year ago.

she has a mac. and oh my god. it only has a 4 gig hard drive. that sucks. her processor was clocked at a bit lower than 1.2 ghz I believe. and I don't know the rest of the specs.
and to think that she got hers no more than a month ago and paid the same price.

I love my alienware. it is my only comp. so I dont have a desktop. but this is kinda like a desktop. a moblie desktop. and now they even have really cool colors to add to the raw power they ofer.

I should check on that really cheap one that you mentioned Avene.

Wow, good for you!

Question- Is there any sluggish behaviour with the screen size at 1600 x 1200 whilst manipulating high poly count models in a singe viewport? That's really the only thing that concerns about running Maya on such a machine.

My friend has the same laptop and he is not impressed by the graphic card. Plus he said that you need at least 1 GB of RAM.

What doesn't he like about the graphics card?

I had a play on my friends new vaio on the weekend it run maya fine. He has bumped the ram up to 1 gig though. I gave it a couple of Metnal ray fames to render and it seemed cool.
Personally I opted for the dell insprion 8500 over then new vaio... ( i am waiting for it to arrive now !!!) yeah !! its has no DVD burner but it mashes any laptop on the market for interactivity in 3d even dells all worshipped Precision
M50 thanks to its new Geforce 4200 also its a hell of alot cheaper... at least in this region.............. Australia.

I've actually read a few bad things about Vaio notebooks since my original post. That's why I'm seriously considering the Sager model from the US with the latest 3.06ghz hyperthreading processor. But by the time I've got the money there'll hopefully be a 3.2ghz model with the 800mhz buss. The processors come out in May I think, so I'd guess Sager would probably use that processor being the latest and fastest.

The Dell looks alright for the price. But if I ordered the Sager, it would work out around $5600 Australian, which is cheaper than the M50, the Sony, and Apple's top of the line TI Powerbooks.

I'd have to disagree on your view that the 8500 does better in 3D than the M50. I own an M50, and it's amzingly fast. I have 1 gig of RAM and Quadro 4 700. I mainly run Cinema 4D, Photoshop & Vectorworks, and I'm very happy w/ it's performence.

You might be right !! I am taking my figures from an article I read in the latest issue of an Australian Magazine apcmag.com in which they had a number of the latest laptops running speed tests on things like max and 3dMark. The figures they showed had the dell Inspiron 8500 at about twice the 3dmark score of anyhting elso next best was the M50 followed by toshiba satellite 5200. I know that a lot of machines were not included in the tests life the Fujitsu-Siemens Celcius H and the compaq Evo 800n which both have ati Fire GL cards. The other main reason I went with the 8500 is price in this region. A stacked M50 is like 2k more in AUS. than the best config 8500.

But dude !!!

an M50 with 1gb ram and Quadro 700 must zip along pretty damn fast !!!

Carefull with those Sony Vaio's, aye !

Friend of mine lent me his Vaio C1 MHP so i can do a presentation with it. That one in particular is super compact and it get's alot of attention and it reflects on your image big time.

Had it for a little over a week.......

Broke my heart to let him have it back.......

Aneks,

Yes it does smoke, however the damn thing is heavy, a "tank" if you will. I would've gotten the CELSIUS cause it looks sexy, or the Compaq EVO 8000w which is lighter and thinner have I gotten approved for financing!! Having said all that -- being that the M50 is my main workstation the trade off for performance is quite welcome.

Yeah, I had issues with the Sagar laptop, but I fixed it by reading the manual. I bought my laptop without Window XP and I just went ahead and installed the XP and drivers without thinking, and thats when my problems started. My laptop crashed and had a very slow performance. I reinstalled XP and drivers in the order the manual said and now my system runs awesome. And no problem with wire view at full window. My laptop is a 3.06 HT, 1 gig mem, ATI 9000 128 meg and a DVD burner. I got everything for about 2,600 US. I really like to see a laptop comparison test using Maya.
