I'm working on maps for a large island. My goal is to have them be as close to photorealistic as possible. The island will never be seen from ground level, just from the air. Unfortunately I don't have much experience in realistic large scale landscape maps or techniques. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips or at least a good tutorial?

Maybe Terragen is something for you? It creates nice landscapes from scratch, and is completely free. It is really easy to use, you build up landscapes from generated bitmaps.

Have a look at it at Planetside.co.uk (http://www.planetside.co.uk/). There you can download it.

:) I've already got Terragen, the shots require more involved animation so I can't use it for that. Thanks for the suggestion though.

It would be easier if you could say us how close you want to get to the island

The closest the camera will get to the surface is a few hundred feet off the ground. To the point where you can see the difference between tree trunks when looking down. (The trees are 3D) But no where near close enough to see individual grass blades, just the clearings for instance. Hope that helps.
