Can anyone tell me where to find the 5.1 sp1 update?

SP1 is supposed to make Max compatible with DirectX 9, right?

It isn't on Discreet's site, I tried downloading just the 5.1 update, thinking that the sp1 is now part of the 5.1 update, but still no compatability with DirectX 9.

I even downloaded the latest version of DirectX (9.0a) but Max will still not work with Direct X 9, only 8.1. Am I missing something?

Which gfx card do you got?

I believe you must have a directx9 based gfx card (i.e Radeon 9700, Geforce Fx etc). I'm not sure though.. Correct me anyone if I'm not right.

But if you're not using custom shaders and scripting advance shit with Maxscript I see no point in having directx9 in 3dsmax.

Go to CGChannel.com, at the bottom of the homepage is a link to the patch.

EDIT: Sorry, that just takes you to the info page on their ftp site. Go back one level and you can find the file 3dsmax51SP.exe.

Tried the sp1 update at home and sure enough the pixel shaders weren't compatable with my graphics card (original geforce DDR). Switched to DirectX 8.1 and still won't work, I get a message that I need a geforce3 or higher. Now I haven't tried to put the sp1 on my laptop, but I am curious as to it it will work or not as I have a geforce4, but a go version as it is a laptop that I have.

Does anyone know if the sp1 will work with the geforce4 go?

Thanks in advance.

Since disceet hasn't officially released the patch yet, it's anyone guess if things would go smoothly. I'm waiting a while, because I'm a 'fraidy-cat. Tennessee? Where 'bouts?

On the Discreet webboard they are saying that this is not an "official" (ie. its a beta) release yet and as such should not be installed onto your system as there could be problems. If you have installed it, you should uninstall it as there could be problems.

@robmaxwell, you need a graphics card that is capable of supporting shaders. An original Geforce 256 card is not capable (you need at least a Geforce3 as it says, and not the MX type) or a Radeon 8500 to get shader support in the program.

mahlon: Yeah Tennessee, just like you, except on the other end of the state:)

Lived in Nashville for about four years doing production work, and I am now teaching 3d animation at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Looks like you are from Memphis. You must be a Jerry Lawler fan. I didn't know he was still around. Got weird vibes about him from that "man in the moon" movie. Looks like a jerk, but hey, I probably would beat the crap out of Andy Kaufman too if I had to put up with his mouth:)

what i know is the mobile version of gf4 (gf4go) is based on gf4mx, so it doesn't have pixel shaders in it.

Thanks Rurouni, that was exactly what I needed to know.
