My apologies if this has been answered. Did a search with no results.

On the Mac I click to open Painter IX.5. A box shows:

The preferred paper library 'Paper Textures' could not be opened. Click OK. Painter won't open. I've tried holding down the shift key when launching. It shows:

Do you want to restore Painter to its factory default state? This will erase all of your modifications including brushes, papers, textures, and other customizations.

If I click Yes I get the the first box above. If No, the same.

Either case, Painter will not launch.

Thank you.

You didn't say if this is a new install or you've been working with Painter for awhile. It sounds like the "Paper Texture" has been corrupted in the install directory. That's weird because, supposedly, that file is read only.

Painter is actually run from the user directory where changes made in the different libraries are read/write and can be corrupted. Using shift while booting reloads the original factory files into the user directory. If this were my problem, I'd delete Painter completely, including your user files, backing up any customized features in the different libraries. You can copy and paste them back after you re-install Painter.

It's hard to see how the Painter files got corrupted. I don't know if you have a check disk Utility in a Mac, but you may have a problem in your physical hard drive. Might be worth checking out.

Best of luck
Tom

Thanks Tom.

I haven't opened Painter for a year. I was about to do just what you suggest and re-install. Just waiting for some moral support.

There's not much I'd want to backup. I recall making a custom brushes palette or something. Otherwise it's set to default.

I think what happened is I did an upgrade today, forgetting that I'd done that alreay last year.

Thanks again,

Robert
