looks like a mean lil b#é@"!
I think his collarbones will be a real weak point though.
They seem like they can be broken quite easily by pulling the hornes that grow out of it

Hi Collings, great work on thant creature. The last rendering really looks great. Did you render it in Photoshop? I suppose it is easier than texturing it for a 3D application and then render it. Keep going!
collings
07-01-2009, 02:35 PM
thanks man ,i did some render passes in Maya ( Lighting, Shadows, spec, reflection, SSS, Occlusion, cavity and fur ) Then i painted over it in PS.

07-01-2009, 02:52 PM
hey collings, i was wondering since i am really bad at unwrapping uvs. how long do you often take to unwrap a character like that? you do it in Maya?
thanks
collings
07-01-2009, 03:18 PM
15 minutes, I'm using UvLayout. I can post a shot of the uvs when i'm home if you like.

07-01-2009, 04:25 PM
thanks, i'd love to see those layouts. I never heard of UvLayout before, i'll check it out, but i suppose it's a software :P
i've always done uvs through 3dmax but i never got the hang of it.

Really like these ps experiments! Are they just for fun? :)
Who is John McConnell, btw?
collings
07-06-2009, 04:16 AM
thanks Rebeccak, yes they are just for fun but i also want to have some of those in my portfolio for when i'm ready to apply for a job at some of the shops in LA.
And John McConnell works as a compositing Supervisor at Flight 33 Productions but he does a lot of photoshop challenges on worth1000.com . I find his stuffs while i was looking for some digital makeup tutorials.

Quick sketches done from symetrical snapshot generated from the soft "youcam" . i absolutely love that technique to find original idea. These photoshop paintings are my first 2 tests , kinda sucks but with some practice as always it's going to be better :)

Cool color study portraits -collings
You may try just doing the line work, because it's drawing that seems to be the problem. Then paint it black and white and after that color it. Far less to think about when doing it in these stages. Really great to see you grasping the 2d realm :)

This morning i crossed a girl on my way to work. She had an interesting look so here is my attempt on painting her. The feet looks way off ahah but anyways it was fun to do.
http://www.nicolascollings.com/Study2D/2009_12_09_Chick01.jpg
Great stuff to be seen here lately!
your last one remembers me of Toulouse-Lautrec, who would sometimes scribble a quick figure sketch on paper inspired by a certain line of a certain pose, or a person's appearance whom he had met earlier that day, etc...
When this occurs, it's a lovely feeling to try and use that info in a sketch.
In fact, it's a drug :D

I think she needs some more balance, as her legs are not straight, it would be logical if she would stand on one of them, with her heel center crossing the center of her mass vertically.
Good master studies!

you're absolutely right i just check my ref and the pose is completly off, i should have made accurate construction lines before to start the painting. will pay attention to that on my next try.

another one done on a peaceful Sunday.
http://www.nicolascollings.com/WIP/2010_01_24_Caravaggio.jpg
Great studies.
I was in a bookstore yesterday where they had this book:
Caravaggio: The Complete Paintings (Hardcover) by Sebastian Schutze.
It's a huge book (50cm tall, 6cm thick) and it's got these huge detail pictures of all Caravaggio's paintings. I didn't buy it because it was over my budget at 99€, but if you can afford it, I can highly recommend it. :)

This is an outstanding sketchbook! I am going to try painting from some of the artists you have painted from.
Hey, where's the 3d stuff?! But great studies in 2d here, mate. Good way to learn more about the anatomy. Can you feel how knowing 3d helps you draw and paint? It sure should.
Sunday well spent with that last one :)
Show us more!

NR43: i dig Caravaggio's painting, thanks for sharing the book i didn't know that one.
razz: it sure helps mate, but still, it's damn difficult to get the volumes right in 2d ^^ it looks either to flat or to apparent etc, i find it difficult to be precise. As for my 3d stuff , i started working on that beast a few weeks ago :) But you know what... i got my first freelance gig as a creature designer so i'll be busy for the next few month working on that great project during my free time

by the way great criature this last one.
Cheers.
Oh, look, I just needed to complain a little and here's an amazing 3d monster :D Lovin' it. Makes me remember that I shouldn't stop doing 3d. Congrats on getting freelance work! That's about time, with your skill...Hope you'll have time and energy to do something for yourself and still post here.
