View Full Version : Xpresso array
Alfred_a 03-31-2003, 05:36 PM I have a question for mdme_sadie, srek and all the other xpresso gururs here.
I would like to create an dexpresso epression to array and object lwith specific number of copies in x, y and z, see pic.
Currently , duplkicate in C4d only does it one layer at a time., Also array only does the radial option. In cinema now , you have to duplicate 2 times, the second being a duplicate of the first duplicate.
If there is a way to do this in xpresso, please help me out.
folowing are 2 pics , one of the interface options and the other with an example array
thanks

Pic 2 of the interface
hmm i havent used Jenna that much but I am pretty sure you could do this with it.
another thing you might want to do is try di cloner. look in the plugins thread.
Hi,
Xpresso can not create new objects or geometrie (Points/polygons). You can create an Xpression that put existing objects in the form of an arry, thats not very hard to do.
Do you want to arrange existing objects or create new ones?

Hi Srek,
I was hoping to use it to create copies of an existing object, so based on your answer, I guess it wont be possible. I still would like to know how to do the other, ie array existing objects. That could be a workaround. ie just make the total number of duplicates and then use expresso.
I will look into some of the plugins JIII mentioned above.
2. on a side note, I noticed , you can move and rotate instances, but you cant scale them(unless you make current-state-to-object, in which case you lose the benefits of the instancing. Maybe there is a way.
3. Also can someone explain why the duplicate object seems to be linked to the object axis and not the object. ie you can move the object, no problem..but as soon as you move the axis ,you get trouble.( iI guess a simple solution is to move the axis before the array, its not a problem, I just wonder
thanks for all your help.

Hi Alfred,
you will find an example on how to distribute objects with Xpresso on my website Bonkers (http://www.bonkers.de) in the Xpresso section. It shows how to arrange them along a spline, but the basic principle is the same.
Instances have no geometry, so you can only scale them with the object tool.
Hope this helps

i think you could get around xpresso bit by using chestnuts plugin and duplicating/aligning to an objects points...but don't quote me on that...somewhere in the back of memory there...good luck let us know how you get on though.
