View Full Version : Dronez: Behind the scenes
lildragon 03-31-2003, 03:50 PM Hello again everyone!
It's been awhile since I conducted an interview, so I decided what better way to start of the month of April than with the hottest talents from The German Film School
Leif Arne Petersen, Alexander Hupperich, Manuel Macha and Paul Dreisen creators on the now famous "Dragons" have recently completed their short film, "Dronez"

very nice. I think that the robots mid section is kinda weird.
and is it just me or does this robot remind you of A.M.E.E. from red planet

Since my visits to cgtalk, the german film school students have been one of many groups of artists who have inspired me greatly. It’s nice to see a well thought out interview about this long awaited short. I’m going to download it now, :)

this is the time where i hate short films. They are just too short.
The movement of that lil bugger is amazing. I'd like to see 2 of them fight against each other.
I had a tid bit of a problem with the sound synching. It's most likely my computer. Oh well. Superb work.:applause:
Just wish i knew where to start when comes to building mechs.

in the picture of the 4 students that is linked above, the middle left guy reminds me of Robert James of Aphex twin:)

Very nice work. I'm glad to see students coming out with such impressive work. It kinda gives me hope and inspiration that I'll be that good someday if I try really hard! Hats off to you four.
Good luck to all,

afaik, XSI is the only app that has real support for it, no need for any fancy scripting, just your basic html drag-drop scripting, most of it is done for you :)
Cool movie btw! :)
hi everybody,
thanks for your compliments...
@ opacity
actually this UI has nothing to do with "fancy scripting", it`s very easy to setup and everybody could learn this in 5 minutes if you have the basic code.
@Groff
The question is always the same, is it worth the efford, and does it really save you time. I really like to work in this way and it took me about 1/2 hour to set this up, as I have already used this window with several other characters...
If you have any further questions or crits just go ahead...
thanks again everybody...

I meant "Fancy" as in 'any scripting at all' ;) but it's cool stuff non the less, sorry, didn't mean to change topic in your thread :D
Back on topic: The foreground snowelements whirling about looks great, which technique did you use for those?

Damn cool short!
My questions:
- Is that the Mayarenderer?
- How did you do the Mblur? (actually we have a huge problem with this on our project right now- 3dsmax :) )
- what was the average time for a frame to render?
- did you seperate many things on layers?
- Is the fire in the tunnel and the explosions CG? if yes, what plug?
One thing I have to mention:
R.O.B.O.T must be damn fast to make it right over the canyon to watch the big explosion (it just escaped from) from a nice place on the other side, hehe
But it's all about storytelling, and not about beeing physically correct ;P
Biggest Respect to all of you.
And btw, nice that "german" fellows did that :P
Gruß
Michael
Hi,
@opacity

I used maya sprites with hardware rendering, this is very fast and efficient, and you also have realtime feedback in the viewport...
@DerPapa
Yes its plain maya renderer, mental ray wasn`t available at the start of this project...
The mblur is either from maya or realsmart plugin for after FX
The average time realy varys from scene to scene. Alex rendered everything in layers. We always had passes for the robot the flying dronez the background, effects, smoke, depth...
It has always been something between 20sec and 20 min per frame...
The fire is real in the middle where the eye is focused and cg at the border. Paul used Maya Particles for the border fire to get some interaction.
thanks again
cheers leif
love the rigging, the robot is soo acrobatic :bounce:
its so amazing how you guys did that :thumbsup:
