i'm tryin gto create an object made out of glass on a black background. Usually i would just use a dielectric or mia_material + HDRI, but it doesn't work so well when the object is set on black. I think it's b/c it looks odd to have the HDRI reflected so perfectky on the glass when there's no background visible. I have other objects in the scene that are lit by the hdri so i can't take it out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Funny you should ask this cause I was working on this today, and unfortunately as I was gaining some ground I hit "End Process" for the wrong program, and poof.

Would it be possible to add some subtle shading to either a background "wall" or some very low diffuse settings for a dark ground plane? Or does your project call for pure black...

You should think like a photographer in this case.
Put one or two reflective panes on either side of
the glass, left and right but invisible to camera.
One smartly positioned area light should suffice,
pump up your refraction/reflections, engage F.G. and render.
After that is all tweaking and pimping.
Glass on black is a challenge even in photography,
and theres lots of tricks that you can learn from it, like
drilling a hole in the floor for hidden light under the glass
which is especially good for liquids.
Here is a little more elaborate example but basically
above princip is used.
