hi everyone!

being an AE nebwie i have a very basic question:

i have two layers:
1) text "TEST"
2) animated material

now: how can i make the animated material only be visible within the boundaries of the text?
-> importing a "mask" from PS does not do the job because i have the "evaporate" effect applied on the text. so it reveals an everchanging shape.

so, how can i make the animated material to be only visible within the everchanging text shape?

thanx for your time :)

as long as your layer order is TEXT on top of ANIMATED LAYER, open up the layer blanding modes panel in the timeline and set the track matte to "alpha".

If you can't find those switches or have never used a track matte before, search "track matte" in the help files.

thanx a bunch bro ! that did the job.
one question though if i may: in the animation the text starts first and the background animation comes in later. so when i apply the alpha trick i cannot see the text before the background animation comes in. any workaround?

make a copy of your text layer, set the mode to normal, set the outpoint to the backgrounds animation start. YOu might need to adjust color and transparency when the background stuff starts, since I don't know your project everything is just a guess.
