Ever since upgrading to v.10 (currently at 10.102 Warp 10) I have been having issues with Gouraud Shading and lighting. Very often the effect of lighting on an object does not show up. Generally my scenes have 3 point lighting. And I have a sphere BG with its own lighting.

Most of the time I cannot see the effect of the BG lighting consistently, If I am moving a light or adjusting the parameter I see how it effects the scene. But as soon as I choose another object the light illumination disappears. Renders are fine. Sometimes the reverse happens. I can see the spotlights cast on the BG but my foreground object appears completely black even though there are at least three lights on it. If a grab a light and start to move it, the Illumination pops on.... but disappears again when I choose another object.

I hope I am explaining this clearly.

Anyway I am on a Mac G5, 10.4.10 5 GB RAM - ATI Radeon 9600 XT Card 128 mb VRAM.

I have tried multiple options in the C4D Preferences. OpenGL Shading, Software Shading. Many of the choices are Grayed out. I have turned Illumination Check boxes on and off in the Light parameters... tried spot lights... Omnis... gone through a lot of different permutations.

Is this a Graphics card issue? Do I need to upgrade and if so what do you all recommend?

It is frustrating trying to guess how my lighting is going to work.

Thanks

A 9600 is not fully OGL capable. OGL can be used with it, but the support you get is very flaky and slow. Don't expect any accurate shading from it.

Thanks Srek.

If I want to upgrade... what do you recommend... I have heard the NVideo GeForce 7300 is the way to go. Not sure of its compatability with my old Mac but if this will make a difference with C4D I will make the investment

Thanks

I don't think the 7300 is available for G5s, but if it is it would be a usefull card as it is on Intel Macs. It does not scream like some more powerfull cards, but it does the job.

I use a NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL on my G5 and it has never given me any grief or trouble.

I have a 6800 Ultra as well. Works great. Although an X800 Radeon or even a Radeon 9800 Special Edition would probably work well too.
