View Full Version : Mountain Bike WIP.
Larky 03-31-2003, 12:58 PM Hi all.
My first post at the famous CGTalk, so be brutal on me!
This is a model of a downhill slalom style mountain bike which will be used, when finished, to try and get funding to build a real one. Not by me of course, I can't build a lego model!
My hosting doesn't allow for remote linking so I'm afraid you'll have to go here:
Bike Page 1 (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/timothy.rust/index.html)
and here:
Bike Page 2 (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/timothy.rust/index2.html)
to take a look. The pages were originally for the 3D World and 3D Buzz forum users, so forgive the text!
Best.
Larky.

brutal coming up...
why bother?:curious: isn't there something cool you could lay your talent for details on? and the bike doesn't look like any kind of bike I've seen...:shame:

Love the details, good work particularly on the handlebar and fork assembly.
I realise the amount of detail becomes a problem on something as technically complex as this, but I think in places it's suffering from a too-low poly count, particularly the wheel rims, stanchion tubes on the forks etc.
I really like the handlebar design but isn't it a bit narrow? I remember doing descents on tricky single track and needing the leverage to make adjustments....something you'd get from a longer handlebar.
Nice to see you're designing "custom" components like gear shifters....unless these are unfinished, I don't think the "dial" shifters are going to be very effective. When you're grabbing for a quick downshift you're going to need something with a lever action....don't always have time to fiddle with the gears!
One final comment, the tread on the tyres looks a bit weak and doesn't really show any directional bias....i.e. on many tyres you'd see the tread aligned specifically with the rolling direction, if you know what I mean.
I think it's looking great, my only prob is that some components might not be entirely practical....

Hehehe, that is brutal! Why bother? Well, because a friend asked me to! And no it isn't like any other bike you've seem, which is exactly the point. I'm just building what I'm asked to, but here are the details.
It will be a hand-made bike. The frame will be alloy and carbon/kevlar. Head stocks etc will be machine-milled billet. It uses hydraulic brake systems to stop fading which occurs with mechanical type systems, hence the overly machined handlebars! But hey, I see your point!
Anywho, any crit on my skill, what should I be improving/working on and what areas of the model need work. I can take brutal, if you think my skills need refinement in one area please tell me. That's the only way I'll learn. :)
Thanks all.
Larky.
Edit, just saw the second post! The gear selection jobbies do have levers, you just can't see them!! I'll post a new pic for ya. I'll put the idea of the handlebars forward and see if I can make the change. Nice to have a fellow bike here, albeit one that uses peddles instead of a throttle! :) Yeah, tyres need work! ;)
