View Full Version : AVI Codec issue
malc0lm 03-31-2003, 08:43 AM Hi all..
I am moddeling a car commercial for a particular class I'm taking, now the problem is this.. I need to get a better codec into Cinema.
I currently only have "VDOnet VDOwave" which only support up to 256kb/s. Rendering to DivX (if possible) is out of the question since my editing program can't handle it (using the built in Movie Maker in XP)m neither can it handle quicktime
Were can I find codecs to AVI and how do I implement it to C4D?
Cheers

You could always use VirtualDub to set up the movie...
Can't really do much when it comes to effects and stuff,
but it's the best there is when it comes to muxing audio and video,
and it's REAL easy to copy paste video segments.
Also,if you have access to linux, there's always the FilmGimp.
Both of these would give you more output options,
as far as I remember, the thing in XP only supports wma output, right?
As for the different avi codecs,it would help knowing the different ones movie maker will accept...
Guessing xvid is out,as is both divx3 and divx4/5?
You could do uncompressed avi out from cinema tho I guess,
and compress using whatever you're using to create the final output.
It's probably a good idea not to compress the output from cinema too much anyways,
as compressing already compressed video can give you artifacts and stuff.
Anyways,I hope this helps a little...

It does support all the *.mpeg format (at least to my knowledge), and quite a few other.. cant check completly now since Im not home. Basicly all codecs that Media Player can download is supported.
Microsoft dont support DivX since its from the beginning a hacked MS codec, so supporting it would indirectly support hacking from MS side.
Im not very keen on buying another softwear when Movie Maker can handling this simple editing very good.

How do I render to a uncompressed avi? I can only choose the "VDOnet VDOwave" when clicking on Configure the output avi.
Anyhow, thanks for the response

whoa man it unless there is something wrong with your C4D you should be able to export in about a million and a half formats, okay maybe not a million but rounding...
anyway just click on render settings, go to output tab thingy, and click on format. there my young padawan you will see many diffrent Image and video formats from all across the land.

VirtualDub is free, available from here (http://www.virtualdub.org/).
I usually render to BMP files (so I can be sure there is no compression) and then use VirtualDub to combine the files (automatically, you just open the first file0000.bmp and VD loads all of the BMP files of a matching base name). Then just select the compression codec and set framerate and "Save to AVI...". Couldn't be simpler, me thinks. :)

Aye,what Pate said :)
Ctrl-O to open the files,Ctrl-C to set vid compression codec,
up to the audio menu to select audio file/bitrate/codec,
and F7 to save to avi. The whole process should take no more than 5 seconds :)
Also,if you need to save just a section out as avi,
use the timeline on the bottom, scrub to the frame you want to start at,
press HOME,scrub to the desired end frame,
and press,surprise surprise,END :)
As for the uncompressed AVI thing,it's way on the bottom on my box.
Render settings -->Save -->Avi movie, and at the bottom of the compressor popup box,
there's this thing called "full frames(Uncompressed)".
I've had it there since the R6 demo,as far as I can remember,
so I can't see why you shouldn't.
Anyways, good luck with the movie :bounce:
