View Full Version : What is the best way to roto in AE
naiyo 08-20-2007, 09:39 AM I'm trying to find a better way or a better app to do roto in. I have this project I’m doing where I’m masking around the actress's eyes to make them blue but I have to keyframe just about every frame because she moves her face left and right. I have been looking at some of the imagineer systems apps but I'm not sure if those are what I need to make roto masking faster or easier. If anyone knows of a better way of doing this, I would appreciate the help.
I have a clip of what it looks like so far

Well, roto is tough, regardless of which app you use. Even if you get motor, Eyeon's Rotation or Silhouette Roto, it will still require working frame by frame on many occasions. Automated mask tracking and better paint tools will improve the workflow, but not get rid of the hard work entirely.

Remember to double click on the footage layer you're working on for a separate 'footage window' which gives you much more control over your roto, being able to marquee select mask points and so on, if you're not doing so already.

being able to marquee select mask points and so on
this also works fine in the comp window, as long as you start drawing your marquee inside the roto'd area.
I don't know if they'll really help much, but I made a few roto tutorials, showing all the tools for rotoing in AE, including how to use a few different types of tracking to help you roto faster.
