View Full Version : 5.1 Update now available
robmaxwell 03-31-2003, 04:34 AM Does anyone know what the update to 5.1 is supposed to fix or add? Discreet's site says nothing about what this new service pack is supposed to do.

Been using it for about 2 months now. It's a stability patch. It also boosts the code set to support CS4.
I'd recommend it very highly. The increased stability is really worth it.
Hope that answered your question.

Only word of warning though is if you use the Set Key animation system. 5.1 introduced a bug that will occasionally weld all selected verts in an object together. There are work arounds though so it's not too major of a problem, just inconvienant.
Overall, it was a good update.

One significant improvement is the max start up time. Now it takes 1 to 2 minutes for max to load as compared to 3-4 previously. And the red splash screen is cool!:)

Whoa! Is there a 5.1 service pack? I'm only aware of the DirextX 9 patch for 5.1. I just checked discreet's site but didn't see any SP...

I was talking about the service pack update to 5.1. It is supposedly compatible with Direct X 9 now? Checked Discreet's site also and didn't see any reference to a service pack or direct X 9 update.:thumbsdow
Anyone know where to find this?

Yes, there is a DirectX 9 for 5.1 patch. Just go to the downloads (http://www.discreet.com/support/max/) page and it's right there at the top.
What I want is the 5.1 Service Pack link. Where is it?

You'd have to login using your registration info from your purchase of Max...
Surely discreet has contacted you with information on the subject...
If not, I'd call 'em and complain...

3DZealot: Are you talking about the Service Pack? When was it actually released? I'm currently working out of town and don't have access to my home email so I'm not sure if I've received anything from the boys at discreet. I'll contact discreet about it if I haven't received any notice (when I do get home to check) but I want to be sure there is a service pack first so I don't sound like an idiot :p

A couple of the 'big' 3d sites have direct links avdvertising some sort of 5.1 service pack 1. Go to CGChannel or 3d Festival and look for that really ugly orange not-so-discreet symbol. But as yet, I haven't heard or read anything about it on the discreet forum.

Okay. Here's some info on this Service Pack 1. Now I just gotta get it! After reading about it I'm lead to believe that the DirectX 9 patch on discreet's download page is the same thing as this 'service pack'. I'll have to do more digging around....

Update: Never mind, the SP1 IS different from the DX9 patch. Just got the SP1 downloaded. Will test it out and see if all this trouble was worthwhile;)

The discreet FTP always has the latest updates. Currently there is both a DX9 and a SP1. I believe the SP1 includes the DX9 update.

A word of warning to you guys.
I have a radeon 9700pro and i had recently applied the dx9 patch for 3dsmax 5.1 and all was well and i could use dx9 with no dramas at all.
After installing the 5.1 service pack 1 i am now no longer able to even choose directx in the viewport drivers options. All i can choose is heidi (bleech!!) or opengl.
All in all opengl is fine, but just to let you know it may cause some problems when updating. I might try re-installing max and just applying the service pack 1 and not the dx9 patch and see how things go.
