Totally awsome modeling!
Great design too. I love the rifling on the barrel.
Can't wait to see it textured, but even without, it's very nice.

that looks awesome... only one crit.. could you make the rifling inside the barrel corkscrew ish... that way it'll seem more true to life..
puts spin on the projectile so it flies better through the air

Rifling looks like that from the end of a barrel...FWIW.
It's actually correctly portrayed...

ok..well i'm not sure what you were thinking of...
but this is what i dug up on google to kinda show what i was thinking of
http://www.riflebarrels.com/images/50insidecrop.jpg
http://www.gunnerynetwork.com/glossary/images/forensic-rifling1.jpg
oh and i know that's from the inside lookin out.. but i'm sure that they'd be noticeable from the angle of that 2nd render, at least the curvature of the rifling would be noticeable:shrug:
...do other weapons have straight rifling?, cos if they do i'll shut up

Wow thanks for yor commets, it means alot.
Hades - I haven't seen this Fausto guys work, i tried looking up his to see the similarities but but none of the images worked on his posts, which is to bad, would have liked to see them.
Daveaustin - The barrel does have some spirlaling to it, how ever not nearly as much as the images you found. I should probably put some more segments on that part to make it more noticeable.
Everyone else, thanks i'm glad you enjoy it. :applause:

Rifling is not all the same. It's measured in twists per inch, and it can be very, very slight in large caliber weapons. If we want to get super technical, then the rifeling on this weapon is rediculous. Have a look at an M79 grenade launcher's rifling as it is almost non-existant unless viewed with a bore light.
But it's a fantasy design, and therfore, I think it looks great...along those lines, Daveaustin may have a good point. Twist the grooves a bit more for that added effect.
Still looking forward to further posts...this is a really fun model.

Oh, oh, and one more thing...I'd give it a BIGASS rear flip-up site...
Mmmmmm...bigass rear sight.....ahhhhhhhh...

Small texture update, dsl has been on the fritz so i wasn't able to post up sooner. a front view here and i'll post a side beneath this one. Kinda worried about the colors, let me know what think about it.

Here is the side view. I was thinking about a site too, the m79 has a big ol one upfront thats kinda cool, but maybe i'll put one in the back with a big magnifying lens or something to look more antique.

Here is the final pic all done, i took out the strap cause i didn't really like how it was turning out, and for the character i'm puting this with i think it would just be a pain. Anyway sorry it took so long putting up this final pic, finished it awhile back just didn't make the time to post, if anyone has any comments about it, let me know. The character, a gnome should be up here pretty soon under its own thread. :bounce:

ComatoseWolf Very very nice, the modeling is really tight !!!
my only crits is that the textures at the barrel tend too make the gun a bit too busy ...
what was the shader used in the first 2 pics ???, looks like a toon shader
good job overall

thanks Robin,
for the first two renders i just lit the scene with an IES Sun with a light tracer on it in Max. Then re rendered it with an ink'n paint material on it, put that into photoshop with a multiply atribute on it to give it the outline. You said the front looks to busy, you mean where the triangles are at? or just the corroded metal?

Nice Model!
As a napoleonic era reenactor, as well as a CG guy, I thought that the lock looked a little off. Here are some reference pics...

Nice reference pic Mr. Cannuck, here is the one i used , i think i like yours better :) That and i kinda neglected that whole frzzen spring part, which i think i'll add in when i get a moment. Also on yours i noticed the hammer bends nicer, so i think i'll tweak that a bit too. Thanks a bunch
