I think I started a personal sketchbook thread like this some time ago, but it was never updated and now even the images are no longer available in it. So a fresh start is in order!

First things first, I'll give you a brief synopsis of my back-story in case you may be interested (if not, stop here and scroll down to the images ;) ). I'm currently a 20 year old Computer Science student, but I've always had a keen interest in art. Unfortunately, I was put off studying art academically as it was a really rubbish course at my school, and eventually I just stopped doing art altogether. I've always aspired to work in the games or movies industry, but I thought I'd play a more technical role.....until being put off by my Computer Science course at University (although I can do it, I really don't find it terribly interesting anymore!). Only fairly recently (on and off over the last year or so) have I made a bit of an effort to try and develop my art - ideally so I can make a living from it someday, although I am realistic about this and I know I am a very long way from this happening! The majority of my art has been done digitally using a wacom but I'm slowly trying to venture into using different traditional medias as well.

Enough of my life story....here are some samples of my best work I've done to date, in chronological order:

Portrait of my girlfriend Roz, using photo reference

Some pencil sketches done from reference, attempting to develop a sense of facial anatomy.

An oil painting (my first one ever, I might add) of a sunset overlooking a tropical beach.

Until now I've always used references, so here is my first attempt at a conceptual character, "Modern Day Alien".

That concludes all of my recent artworks that I don't consider to be complete rubbish! Now, here are the very first stages of what I am currently working on. It started as a random doodle in Painter, but the form of a cyborg/robot woman emerged and I started to develop it with some colour.

Although I'm fairly pleased with how this is (slowly) progressing, I am completely stuck for ideas for an interesting background and composition for the image. I'd really appreciate any ideas you may have, and obviously any constructive critiques for any of my pieces as well.

Thanks for looking!

Great piece of Roz, really like it. You painted the hair as form and not individual hairs, so nice to see it done right. And you keep the blacks to the eyes and away from the other features.
I have an observation about the two sketch pages that you may want to consider. I'm not saying that the images are wrong but this might help them be better. The drawings are very line based and although there are shadows they seem at odds with the lines. Try using more tones or blocks of shade to form the subject instead of just defining it with lines. It's hard to explain so take a look at http://www.scottburdick.com/2006SusanLyon.htm if you get the chance. This is a rather advanced mindset and isn't something I'd say to most people but I think you might find it interesting.
On the robot lady thing you're working on the eyes are off. The outside of the one on our left angles up but the outside of the one on the right angles down. They actually were both subconciously painted horizontal which makes it look that way with her head tilted. The body position feels akward, have you considered having her standing straight at a three-quarter turn away from us (her facing left)? This way she'd just be casually glancing down to her left. I don't think you necessarily need a background, some opposing color and tones would be fine but I would like to see the rest of the body.
Hope you don't mind my ramblings, Cheers -thePoet
