View Full Version : Character: Polymodelling a female character
MartinNH 03-31-2003, 12:47 AM Hi everyone, heres a project I'm working on these days. She's supposed to be some kind of secret agent.. not very original, I know :)
The basemesh is modelled in wings3d, which I'm really starting to like a lot! Then refined in 3d max which is more precise once the mesh gets to detailed. I haven't used any ref's on imageplanes, which might explain any anatomical errors.
I hope you like it, and that you can give me some tips on how I should proceed from here :)

Glad you like it kamul :)
I'm working on the rigging of the character now, and I was hoping that some of you experts out there could give me some tips. When I move my rig parts of her skin goes through the cloths.. whats the best way to avoid that? Deleting the polygons under the cloth is one way, but is it possible to just hide polygons from a render in max?

Down to page 6 with only one reply
Here's an update. I dropped her outfit and the rigging, so for now I'm going to concentrate on the body and face alone. Any help is greatly apreciated :)

hi Martin!!
Maybe...her hips are a bit wide...and her knees too much exagerated.
She is very pretty, like it a lot.
See ya, more updates apreciated from now on too :bounce: ;)

Martin this is looking nice :D
The only crit I can suggest at the moment is her thumbs thumbs can never get that angle it is almost 90 degree's there you try its impossible! unless she is double joined I guess hehe.
The knee's need less refinement yes.
I'm looking forward to seeing this fully textured
Her body looks great. Although I'm quite scared of her eye's they look to well....piggy. Think they need to look bigger and wider.
Other than that looks great :bounce:

Thanks for the comments :)
Here's another updates. Made her breasts a little bigger again, and tried to fix her eyes. I still need to work on her feet.

That's a tight model. I get a little intimidated by organic modelling; I stay with the vehicles and industrial modelling. Anywho, what's the smoothing angle you're using?

Thanks tovette. I'm modelling in 3d max 5 and using meshsmooth, nurms with 2 iterations.

Update: I've been working some on her feet, but I'm still not happy about how they look.

coming along nicley, one thing that bugs me is the rib cages middle should end almost between her breasts, a bit below, its to low right now and is making her look a little odd.
here is a good refernce picture, although shes much more muscular then you want its great ref for where the musceles and stuff start and end

I really LIKE the way she's built, personally-- there is a lot of character in her proportions and stance. I like the wider hips, though they could use some more careful definition of the bone structure underneath-- the upper point of her hipbones appears to be almost entirely absent. She could also use bigger calves, too, to go with the sturdy look that her upper body has.

Thanks for the links Anotherhell, they'll be usefull. Gnarly, glad you like it so far. I'll work on the bone structure. On this update I've given her a pair of underpants. The knots on the sides was pretty difficult to do, as I tied them as one would tie a real knot :)

I love the model, especially the proportions.
The two things that bother me are:
1. the face wa butt-ugly in the wires! it looks like you cleaned it up a bit in the renders but I can't really tell.
2. The entire lower leg just looks...funny. (by funny I mean wrong) the shin-bone needs to show and there is no definition of the calves.
this is great work, I think that if you spend just a little more time on it, it will be totally Slammin!!

Thanks for the replies guys. I agree that the head was ugly in the first wires, but its worth noting that this is only my second real head :)
Heres an update with a texturetest:

Here's the latest update. This time I've been doing some rigging of the character, rendered a frame and painted the background in photoshop. The rigging is realy hard to do, but I guess thats just a matter of practice. Hope you like it :)

Since you gave me a really good critique on my model I'll return the favor.
I really like the model... the only thing that I can see is that her legs are a little too small in proportion to her body. Mostly her calves IMO.
I really like how you did the breasts, very well done... and not busty which lots of people like to do which kind of looks odd.
I can't wait to see it finished!
