View Full Version : custom attributes in production
Hi there,
Just wondering if anyone has used custom attributes successfully in a production environment. Because everytime I use them I seem to end up wanting to throw myself out of the window into the way of an oncoming tram.
The idea seems pretty usefull and possibly even nessesary for a nice character setup but it's just to crashy for me to use on any job....

I haven't used them in a production environment (not one where there's money involved anyway), but I have used them in a script that applies rotational springs to linked objects.
I didn't use the Apply Custom Attributes tool there, I scripted the definition myself, maybe that would give you more control over it and thus make it more stable.
Anyway, you can check out the script here (http://home.sol.se/anders_e/AE3d/Scripts/SpringJoint/Index.htm). The Custom Attributes Definition goes from almost at the top of the macroscript to two thirds down, so it's quite large and complex, but the only time it crashes is if the Modify Panel is open when you apply it, which I worked around by forcing the Create Panel to open before the user applies it.
In my experience, custom attributes are perfect for stuff like parameter driven script controllers and expressions, which is nice in a character setup.
Hope my input was useful.
Thanks man,
I'll definately check that out today. The add attributes thing does seem a bit on the shakey side...

I've used it once for work. I found it to be too timely to set up and dithced using it. There seems to be alot of trial and error in setting up sliders with integers that aren't too large or small. Plus I've found no way to adjust a custom attribute once it's been created. Stability is definately an issue as well.
