i would suggest transforming it into dxf via rhino3d.
there is also a 30daydemo of it, so you can try it out.
we transform all our data this way. dxf brings in the file structured so each dwg layer gets a group in c4d. also rhino lets you controll most aspects of the dwg file.
alternat i think there is a free dwg to dfx app on the cinema dvd. i am not sure though if you get a proper layered structeure then.
cheers

i'm assumming you're in AutoCAD? then use .3DS
I believe that the latest version of AutoCAD has removed the .3ds export. However, it is available for download, though I don't recall the web address.
We use Vectorworks for our 3d DWG translation:
VW can import DWG files quite cleanly.
We then "export" that file, from VW, as a C4d file using the purchased plug-in from Maxon's website. Items grouped by color or classes in VW arrive as groups in Cinema.
Though it's not a free solution (around 1K for VW) it seems to work well if you're doing a lot of transfers.

Open it in Vectorworks, with the vectorworks plugin you can export it for C4D.

Anybody used deep impact to convert dwg files?
http://www.righthemisphere.com/products/dexp/de_cad.html
Seems they have an option to remove all interiors of a scene for outdoor archviz.
Sure would be good for me, I am working on a fully equipped hotel at the moment. quite a task to remove it all by hand.
Also what would be good is to have an importer that makes instances of objects that are the same. Importing from revit, leaves tons of objects that are the same but just different locations(windows, doors and such). Anybody know of such a thing.

No. We've been asking for that function for years, haven't gotten it yet. But I met some people from Maxon at the DMVC Conference in San Diego recently, and they seemed very open to hearing ideas for how to improve C4D for arch-vis users. I'll re-suggest that one. It tops my wishlist.
Speaking of which, there was a thread for arch-vis wishlists a few months ago. I want to look that up again before talking to the Maxon people.
To the DWG question--just about any CAD program can read a dwg and export a dxf. So can general design programs like Rhino and FormZ. If you can't find any way to do this translation yourself, you can ask one of us to convert it for you.

Hi everyone
I have 2 DXF files that are unusable for me. When I open them in C4D, they're empty.
Could anyone help me opening and testing them, and maybe exporting them in a c4d file format? (I will email the files, leave me PM)
It would help me a lot on a current project.
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards,
Chris.
PS. If you want to help me please PM me.
