This is the strangest thing, I do a draft render and the first time it's fine then I hit the button again to do another and bam my hard drive grinds a little and a window pops up saying the application has encountered an error and will now close, gives me an option to save the file.

I did all the usual stuff disabled plugins, did a clean install of Max 5.1 and applied the service pack. It's still doing it. The weirdest thing is that I hdn't had prblems before but I don't know what really changed on the system <nothing I can think of>. I

t's a really odd thing and sort of a pain in the ass. I also tried merging the geometry into another scene but still I got the same errors. Maybe the object is somehow corrupt? It dosen't seem to matter what I've got in the scene I've tested plain newly created cubes and I get the same thing. In some cases I'll e able to render out a few drafts on something but when I go to save the renders it gives me that same error.

Anybody have a clue? I'll hit the Discreet board later. I'm curious to see what people here think of this though because I think this is genuinely bizzare.

try shutting off any antivirus programs or any other background processes to see if the error goes away.

Also see if the behavior is repeated using all video card options (software, directx, opengl, maxtreme)

I did try disabling NAV but the error persisted. I'll try changing the viewport driver and see if that does anything. I'll be dissapointed if it's Maxtreme as that's so nicely optimized for 3dsmax.

Thanks for the advice Sam.

It turns out that Maxtreme was giving me the crashes when I was rendering. I still have problems with Max crashing when I attempt to shut it down. It omnly seems to happen on one particular file so I'm thinking that the object might be corrupted. I'll try another merge and see if getting itinto a different scene solves the problem.

So FYI the latset version of Maxtreme dosen't seem to be the most stable or dependable display driver.
