Saw something about the polycounter a few posts down and thought I pitch my modified version of the viewport polycounter.
If you run into trouble when using it on big scenes, go into the script and blank out the part that go through the entire scene and count polycount for all objects. With small scenes or few objects, this shouldn't be a problem.
Should you need it, it can be found at:
http://www.3dbuilder.nu/rod/technicalstuff/counter.htm
(must have object selected to see anything...)
Description:
"Since the standard polycounter in max4 and max5.0 don't count editable polys in the same way as editable meshes. Here's an modified counter, it counts everything as meshes and also counts the total polycount in the scene (also as mesh). Otherwise it works like the standard polycounter."
