This is about an morbid hen. In fact, poached egg lover! ;) .

I wanted to create something simple, opposed to "complicated" idea in Illustration section.

I plan to make my model as simply i can manage, yet with some crucial details. For now i plan hen, the nest, eggs, simple room,frying pan, fryer, broken eggs, fried eggs, ... well too much enough! :)

1. Hen is hatching an egg.
2. Happy seeing new eggs!
3. Hen runnings with the egs in delight.
4. Close up of breaking eggs (this could be complicated, i should see how to animate the egg liquid best and fastest)
5. Hen is frying eggs! (maybe to add chef's hat)
6. on the table, prepared to eat (maybe i will skip this scene, as maybe enough will be to show egg frying).

Here is wireframe and lit model of the main character. Not yet fully finished (suggestions are wellcome) but i guess it will not go too much in realism then this... maybe some tweaking, and of course, texture.
Done it in about 3 hours, using wings 3d.

Proceeded with hen rigging... took me about 4 hours to build skeleton, asign vertex group (and name them), and then test it. It is not still perfect but it is ok for now... (Blender)

The funny thing is that chickens actually like eggs... if you ever drop one they will run up and eat the yolk. :scream:

Yea that will probably happen, also they will eat shell because it will make their next eg better etc... very smart creatures!

But tis one is special, because it breaks its egg by own will, and is making poached eggs :) .

Great start, Nenad. That's some very nice modelling with Wings, too. I started using Wings myself about a year ago; it's really quite a nice program, and it can compete very well with some of the commercial modellers. I never really got into Blender myself, though it looks like you really know how to push it to its limits.

Best of luck to you in this competition. I look forward to seeing what you produce!

Thanks for the words of suport, vmulligan! Yes, Wings3d is very good and I like its spartanian constitution! Only thing that is lacking is that it was not been updated for a very long time :( . I would really like to see some new features in it...!

Firstly I came to Blender because of low budget, but now I used to like it... Once you are used to its frightening interface, and comprehend its logic, it is really great tool... and it is constantly under development!

There is a great movie made with Blender, called "Elephant dream"... have a look at it to see the power of Blender in action!

I have played around with Blender a tiny bit -- enough to recognize that it's a pretty powerful program. I never mastered the UI, though. But yes, films like "Elephants Dream" certainly show off what the program is capable of doing. And the fact that it's an open-source program under active development is a big plus, too. My experience with open-source software programs is that they tend to be relatively reliable, and when you do find bugs, it usually doesn't take long to get someone to fix them. It is a shame that Wings updates seem to be few and far between...

Thanks for encouragement, DaddyMack...! I surely need it, as i switched from calmer waters of illustration challenge to stormy animation sea...:wise:

I am not going out with complex demonstration of the rig yet, still need to work on some details, and shape keys... i guess Ill leave that for little bit later, concentrating more on the props now.

BTW time is leaking, and will leak even faster, anyone noticed that ? :eek:

I started to model some props, directly drawing what I imagine in Wings. Here is the part of a baking arsenal. The fryier will have narrow cable fallling from the table, connected to a power panel. the chair and the table will remain simple. whole ambient should be combination of the simple style, and some art nouveau ornamented details. More and more props to come, yet must try not to overload the scene, because i will spent too much time on texturing, while main thing shoul be the chicken. I worked more on its rig, added eyes, but now I will develop props and try to assembe whole scenery.

I decided that I will put some cage in which Lucy will lay her leggs, to reffer to chickens who spent their whole life laying eggs in a cage. But this is very luxury one, even with a hole and pipe to guide the hatched egg in a pot to collect them. This should be goodly directed, to slowly reveal whole cage and surroundings as the story develops.

Hey Varma, thanks for a very ecouraging words!
I am now trying to build few fine meshes to create the room where chicken reside. It is in fact small rented-like human room where is chicken kept like a pet... so I will add some more props like cupboard, fridge, a lamp, will add door with small door inside, a window...etc. will try to create warm but wierd atmosphere.

One thing I am afraid of, that I am working too much on the ambience now, and will shorten my time for animation part... but i need those props to create some story about it, i am fond to narrative way of telling story (and so are you, as I can see, judging by the number of meshes you create :eek: )

If there is any quality in my modeling, I need to say thanks to my highscool teachers (that was in about 1986, when computer modelling was unknow to masses, exept maybe Kraftwerk television spot with their animated heads), when they, as the heritage of the older Zagrabian fine painting scool (connected with Munich) forced us to understand thing around us as the surfaces. They insisted that we create our drawings, and render them (with pencil, usign differend shades of gray) as a simple low poly models! Then we were allowed to go in details, after we created relative good plain sketch, looking lots as an low poly wireframe.
Some of us, pupils, were angried by this rigid teaching, and rebbeled, but I embraced the technique after I comprehended that I can "subsurf" my models by shading and "subdividing" more and more parts, and achieve high realism!
Our teacher moto (which we mocked) was "Cleaner, cleaner surfaces!" ! Of course he was unaware of the modern digital era which is prospering by that theory :)
Later, on Belgrade art academy (which was closer to the poetry in art than to accuracy) i was introduced to the different technique, the Line, which is free and flowing. (maybe something like nurbs modeling?? I am not fond to it, so far). But it helped me to soften the accurate polygon style, and to add some "spirit".

I started to babble like an very old man. Also I noticed that I started to remember the things from early childhood. Am I getting old, am I going to die?? :) :scream:

not babble nothing man jeje, i totally agree we need to have good knowledge in simple form and we need to have good hand drawing skill too, i start 3d old, very "old" and i loss with nurbs to much for my old brain and the 3d software fight with me and win me almost all the time when i want something, he rules (for now), your work are amazing, clean shapes and good use of loops to close the forms, the idea are very funny good luck, nice and very lucky you have good teacher.

That was an interesting reading about your art background! I believe those 3d artists who
happen to have some amount of traditional art training/practice as backup, will approach
3d visualisering in quite a different way and very so often, successfully too! Once you have
managed to shade an object in different shades of gray, with say a pencil or charcoal, and
given it a true 3 dimentional essence, you won't have much trouble replacing the pencil with
a mouse and enter the realm of computer-generated art! Just a matter of time to learn how
to navigate and find the right menus!
Recently, I've been more and more attracted to, as you also mentioned, lines, instead of
solid forms! Personality and dynamic of a line, or curves, to be more precise! The silouette
of an object and how it can appeal to our senses, how it can divide the 2d space and it's
realtion with nearby siloettes, the negative space!
Unlike you I was so fond of curves, I started to learn them and play with them, starting
with Rhinocerous and then Maya! Now, I can't afford not to using them on a regular basis
and block out my sketches and pre-vis routines!
I would scincerely recommend exploring their power, as nothing else, even subD modeling
can replace them and offer the same flexibility and softness as nurbs! Although the newer
workflow methods suggest more and more use of polygon and SubD cageing, I still believe
nurbs/spline modeling will always be a part of any highend 3d package!
Huh, who is babbling now?
And please don't die just yet, at least until you finish the challenge! :D
I would like to see the room with all those objects and a little door within the door, made
for hens and chickens!

sadrack: thanks for sharing thoughts and words of support! Yes the knowledge of classical art is great, because all art have the same root in vaste abyss of mathemathics and geometry from one side, and emotions and spirit on the other :wise: . About software: There is a vast number of 3d application around us, an 2d aplications too... and they have their power, and price. I am trying (installing and trialing) any software I hear of, as much time allows me; first important thing is to see if the software package have all tools it needs to have, second how hard is to use that tools(icluding speed of execution), third what is its price. Yet, with some knowledge about matter, you cannot judge allways abot first and second. Because of factor number 3. i havent created anything useful in highly professional and high cost software. House adaptation was thing of ther rather higher importance :) . After all, most important is to create, even with the poor tools you can do something great if your will is strong. Though, with better tools and the same will the result will be even better. I think I found good tools for myself, with some downsides, yet very powerfull. At last, most powerful and most deadly weapon is one which you can handle. Elf is bad at Hammer and Dwar at Bow. What you are trained at, is most efficient. Efficiency can gave birth to a quality, because you can do more operations in less time. Yet it can be disaster if you are building on wrong roots. And from disaster man can learn too :) . Call me Nenad the Wise :applause: . After all, it is a Sunday, it is more propper to discuss today and work tommorow!

Varma: yes that was my point too! Hapily, besides art, I allways had great will and love for computers. Maybe it is because of my elder brother, who was very interested in Computers, studying them, and today working as the IT proffesionaly. Our first computer was zx81, and then Spectrum, on which we learned to program, even in Assembly code! (about 5% of time, other 95% was spent on games (which are great too!)). That all gave me the strenght to live today from both of that experience, as an Graphic designer here in Croatia.
Which brought me to another thema which you mentioned. As an designer I use curves very much, also transparencies and gradients. Curves can twist observers brain, and can hypnotise the customer to buy a product :) . Curves have natural and attractive look, and when combined wit gradient and glass effects - there is a winning combination of a modern era :). I like curvy approach in my classical illustration work (can be seen on my 2d classic wor web page, i think link is here in my cgprofile), as I am fond to organic and natural objects (ZBrush would be good to me, I will not hide that I am watching some video tutorials about it from time to time). For now I will stick to box modelling and receiving them from smoothing the cubes...but I know what you are saying and am not afraid of pulling konts, just I am leaving that for later.
Just do not have time for all! Got family with two kids, and great ambition too, which can tear a person apart. Family though, must be allways of the higher importance. I envy little to younger people who have plenty of time or who are on studies: If I had this experince and 15 years less, I would never got myself without investing time in learning, learinng and learning! Yet I would never throw away live experience and great motivation that family gives me!
About the negative space: I learned much of its practical power doing the classical watercolours: often modeling in watercolours is based of painting something by painting its surroundnings. Especially because there is no white colour in pure watercolour, the white is white of the papper. So you are painting light by avoiding it!
I remember one of my good colleague impressions of my rigid technique. Most greatest madness is when I was creating some starry skies with aquarell. He was shocked observing me paint every star by avoiding small gaps of white space :eek:.

Well all kids went to bed and wife too, guess it is my turn now :)

I wonder anyone will comment it, but-yes, I have done quick subsurf of my low poly model without defining smoothed and non-smoothed groups, what resulted in some eges to receive unplanned smoothing. But it goes with idea, the smooth, orient looking golden cage, delicate one. Mesh is twisted in its low poly geometry a little, to receive even more fluid flow, and notice how the legs of it are twisted too. Yet I will consider should i harden the lower edges of the cage and some other details a little - surely i have to define some harder edges!

Stimulated by the increasing number of props i started to create, I decided it is time (lol) to define te whole room more precisely. So this is it, i guess, without little details, of course. I guess this will be the battleground for furniture of all kind, the flymarket :), but here it goes. I succeeded again to make my life more complicated...
Good thing is that I came to new ideas for filling starter simply scenario with small funny situations. I must create detailed storyboard very soon.
How many days we have... about 50? Less? Well God help me finish this...
Also here is Cupboard, without some smoothing groups I plan for that springs etc. Even like this it looks solid enough... Hope to have less complicated props now left, save the bed only...

Did I mentioned that hen Lucy is held captive by strange person, who seems to be off now from his flat? well thats the reason why we have such room. I plan to put some pictures on the walls, which would explain more.

...continued with furniture production... Here is the lovely bed, one of the mans best invention :) I even modeled some minor parts underneath the bed... who knows, what is it good for! :)
The blanked is not yet perfectly positioned but I will correct that later...

Very nice modeling on the cupboard! The mesh is so optimised, it almost look like an
Autocad sketch! The details on the bed are very good too! These props will add the
overall effect of you scene, for sure!

Proceeded with mesh manufacture... I want to have all the room meshes soon as possible (there is UV paint ahead also - it will consume time... i think i will not go in much of compexity in UV... i think ;) ).

I am also studying now how to apply feathers to hen... it is very complicated to do it accurate, then again i would like to have some of them in space, not only of UV paint nature..will see... anxious to finish the ambient and return to chicken anim.

Verisden: Thanks again for support, lad. Trying my best, though working utterly tired at the late hours... my daily job consumes about 11hours of day with travel...and kids... my leggs stars to freeze and eyes to shut ...

Morning Nenad! I like the last modeling session very much, looks very nice and very efficient!
I guess this is your watermark, not an extra polygon to waste, just as many as needed to
do the job! Almost like CAD precision! I can see it by the way you have cut out the windows
in the clock!
The refrigerator reminds me a lot of our old one, which I think will add a lot to the overall
feel of your scene!
And hey, no rest until we get old, really old! but even then...

Okay i managed to write more detailed storyboard, which draws in some new elements - details in the story. Comments and critique are very wellcome,... also I am trying to connect the hen more tho the environment, so i did it with Captors picture on the wall...

Trickz: Thanks for checking in! Every word of support means lots to me, and I guess to everyone of us. Hardly that anyone of us can afford to work on this fulltime, so morale boost is allways appreciated!

Varma: Aye, as we get older and older, our meshes will be more reduced more and more low poly till we reach single polygon :) and start to claim that it is wonderous scene in that single one! :)

Precision is illusion :) . If any precision in the, I can say thanks (again) to my father, who is architect... I watched too much how he ponder in his plans on his enormous table, and draw very precise and accurate lines on transparent papper!

From the other side, listen to this: Last night when I had modeled that chucko clook. I even thought of putting little chicken to come out in full hour declaration. thats why I modeled central window open. But then I discovered that I dissolved very important vertexes around the window opening... so I could not carve the hole! I tried everything, to bridge to append mesh and reverse extrude the hole... to export cleanup and reimport, but I probaly frozed the surface for good, mrehehehehe....

Tnx for support anyway...! I will succeed or you can smite me with Miolnir! :)

daymn buddy this is moving from strange to psykotic... i mean sorry to say this but i'm a bit disturbed by this story of urs... first I thought it was just a funny story abt a hen who cooks her eggs but now its turning into this serious thing where (if u c it from a human perspective) a mother kills her child... mmmm I guess its a good idea to think abt this thing a bit more...

Im really sorry if i was rude, it was just my honest opinion.

Yea I guess you are right, but anyway this larger story brings to light what the lite story hides; but in fact both of them are the same... only the larger version have more dramaturgy. Yea I pulled much of asociation on the family and emotions there... but I think it was unavoidable (for my thinking process), and I admit that it have much psyhodelic elements, in very dark meaning.

In fact it tells a "hidden" story of a woman who is in prison of her sins, and her captor is devil. She can break through, and free her self, but she choose to follow the path of gluttony and to continue being hedonistic, thinking of herself and her enjoyment, commiting kind of abortus. She struggles with herself a little, willing to change from evil to picture of family... but then she decided to enjoy the meal instead.

Strange behaviour in this should be that: she havent chosen natural and logical path of saving her future children. As the story ends in madness, it does not approve what she is doing. (I am personally gratly agains abortus).

If I can even more put that stream of my thinking in focus I would do it gladly...

Yet I do not know how much I am mistakeing by meeting or not meeting strict requirements of the contest, it says: "Entrants are required to bring to life Strange Behaviors in the most entertaining, humorous and emotive way"
Emotive it will be, thats for sure. Entertaining, to the some point. Humorous: also, to the some point (if I can achieve that animation will be humorous!).
Strange behaviour is present.
Only I am not sure about what you noticed, that disturbing element in it...

Looking for more opinions!

sorry if i was offencive... but that was just my opinion... i personally would not like to hear or see a story where a parent kills her child thats all... and i dont really find the humor in this kind of story atleast it dosent go with a theme like "STRANGE BEHAVIOR" its meant to be fun, way far from serious and over all possitive (positiv enough to make the audience smile)...

thats just one man's say... u go ahead with ur idea, as an artist you have the lisence to be free..:thumbsup:

I apologize to everyone, this reply is rather long, but I let my thought stream flow freely :) ... you may sikip to last paragraph :)

Hmh, there is such thing as dark humour... for example as in british series "Black Adder" etc. you can laugh to death because you know it is not for real. Now if you start to think deeply of course that you can find disturbing things. We are watching - even let our kids watch - Tom and Jerry, where we have much of extreme violence, but because it is abstract and overpotented, and nobody really gets hurt, we approve it and laugh.
I will not try to pull the hidden story too much, though it is present. Maybe the storyboard formed in you head too violent sensations. I am planing to make this more funny with her movements and funny changes of her mood (I observed chickens and in fact they are acting very funny)...

Then again I stated from begining in my topic that it is an morbid hen, who likes to eat the eggs, and it is still a fable and nothing explicitely brutal will be present, as long as we accept that this is an fiction, not the truth...

I do not know the way to stay on this scenario and to avoid possible bad acossiations...

Sometimes you must make an overcontrast (!) to make some situations funny, but I agree that it can appear blunt to someone, like a blunt joke, which can make you laugh, in spite you know it is not good (positive). Then again personally i would never tell someone such a blunt joke, because it uses vocabulary and topic which generally i dont approve. Though I LOL-ed much on Borat movie, I guess I never filmed such movie... and if I am creating something too morbid, let me know.

At the end, I will quote again the contest introduction: "They (Strange Behaviours) also stimulate discussion – what one person finds funny another thinks is demented. "

It would be precious to me to hear what other people think: I take your opinion, Overcontrast, very seriously as an critique and would like to improve my story if anyone suggest me how. Maybe I was fooled because several people here told me that it is nice concept ? :), or I am mistaken in interpretation...? Maybe the story will appear to sick to laugh ?

I went through your storyline and I must say it's a very detailed story! I could estimate
that you will need around 15+ seconds to show all the pictures with some plausible
pauses for each one to have their effect! That is a huge workload and I wish you all the
best for realising this, cause you're gonna have your hands full, aside 11 hours work, two
kids and family!

Hey Varma, your view is too optimistic! I guess that whole thing, in spite of fast action, will be 1min at least long (I am not sure if I will proceed with 3d timeline visualisation, but for sure i will create a little Flash movie to get sense of the tempo), maybe even 2 mins, and more!
As you well noticed, this is like some freelance non obligatory job; if I see that I cannot make it I will shortent things a little, or simplify it. Ill see. I reckon that I can afford maximally 55-70 working hours for this project, withouth rendering time, and what can be done within that time, will be done..
And I think I should play more Rush from now on, not Creep (Warcraft I,II,III players will understand this :wise: )

Right now I am sitting back in a front of a computer dully (thinking both of my further impossible mission and scenario improvement), and I think i should get some rest and see some people, like my wife! :)

Just an quick pose test... i discovered that i have to polish skinning after i finish the props, also some part of the rig not finished yet... not to speak of the FEATHERS!
I guess I will stick with UV mapped feathers, keeping my character cartoonish...
Hope the ship will not chrash!

the wing which points backward is strange, I think it's because of the elbow, it points forward, try a more human-like elbow pointing backwards. Now it looks kind of inverse.

The hen model is cool, I like her.

Mapped feathers on the body will be alright, but I would put real feathers on the tail.

npantic I have read your storyboard. This story has a Medea style. Three years ago I see an oil picture of a woman that was cooking her baby. Her face was the face of a mad woman. She has a very interesting face. I don't remember the author. I think that one of the most important thing of this animation it is the facial expression of hen. I am interested to see the animation of the face hen when fry the egg.

I like wings (www.wings3d.com) to low modeling too.

Hey Anya, thanx for comment! About her wings, well I followed Bird-like anathomy rig, but i admit maybe it looks strange because i will use wings as a hands, what suggests human anathomy. In fact, I have planned to show the hen as an ordinary "realistic" hen in the start, with chicken movements, and to use cartoonish humainoid movements after she lay eggs. That is still a plan, but I guess i will need her more for cartoonish animation. I will see what to do, and can I set up the rig that it can be used by both animation setups...
About the feathers - yes, that was my idea too in one moment (the tail looks to flat), but somehow it escaped me in my last thoughts- thanks for reminding me! :)

Fruela, tnx for visiting! About rhe storyboard: The main decision is will i show that she is aware wat she is doing, or is she consumes eggs like human. To the last scenario, she is aware, and that requires, as you well noticed, many expressions on her face. I am still meditating though, will I modify scenario and make her basically unaware of what she is doing.
BTW, I will create her facial expression using Blender shape keys. Also, i am abot to simplify her leg rig, because it dos not need so much accuracy, and work more on her face.

I added 5tons heavy metal piece falling on the chicken after her ultimate madness... in the Monthy Pyton Flying Circus style ! :)
Also continued to work on environment, and did some cleanup to the chicken mesh, reading it for shape keys and UV mapping.

5 tons is brutal ? I considered 500 kg but I came to conclusion that is not enough .
Yes camera trembling would be nice, and if I will have time there will be also some particles (dust) and scattered pieces of the ceiling around...
...and i plan one addition to the last scene (got idea just now)... to put bunch of little chickens bursting from the hole in the cieling :) ... (at least single one standing on the top of 5tons, if nothing)
I too cant wait to lay my hands on animation, but i still have few meshes to solve, not to talk about UV mapping! Though, i think Object are more-les simple and details are done in geometry - so I will not go in details there, or so i think :)

Yesterday i finished some more meshes, like door, window, walls, wallpapers, chickens hat etc. and today i started to assemble things in the scene. This is wip, very early, but you can see that mood will be somewhat dark :) . Need to add more of those unsticking wallpapers, fix some seams etx. and then start to uv and place the furniture and prepare the scene...

pretty funny. hope you have time to get it done. the only critique i would have so far would be that the reflectivity on some of your objects seems too high. the most noticeable being the fridge. i really like your modelling and texture work. looks like everything has been well thought out.

And here is some small test render through environment (Sorry for camera being too fast.)... much WIP, still MANY objects to add and many things to tweak and correct...Oh, and I decided that outside is night (window), and perhaps fridge will be placed next to window to fill more space... il see about that.


@r1-381: yes, the fridge is too reflective: i just "finished" texturing it tonight, and it is in fact meant to be older model, not so reflective, just a little bit. And few edges ond him has to be smothed... And yea, thema allows me to apply many kinds of rich textures... i will paint them even more but in the last stage i think if any time left.

The update... I am pressing hard to finish the room, to have (mostly) all elements in scene (though i am thinking of some new small details, but as they will not affect the story i will add them possibly later). I am anxious to get my hands finally on animation. I have maybe few hours to finish the room, and then finally to work with hen again (I need to texture it, and check the rig, also to add shape keys for facial expressions). If all will be ok, I will start to animate maybe even before weekend. Also, need to refine screenplay, as I have added/reduced some parts of the story...

The room is mainly done... i refined some proportions, added some small details, an cage is set up... As I consider everything is in place, I will start to animate, and refine lighting/some details on the go. But next step is Hen texturring and facial expressions, (rig is 80% finished from before). I also did some eggs that will be used in movie. Still have to refine scenario (have it in the head but havent put on papper yet)

Hey Anna, tnx for useful suggestion! In fact I had turned Ambient Oclussion before and in some point i turned it off :) :) (I guess to improve render speed).
So i think I can keep this setings because of faster render times, and later improve the setup, or improve it on the fly. I am very interested in improving light setup/render.
It is internal render - do you recommend something? How did you rendered your final movie?

Melkao, hehe thank you! In fact it was done (the yolk) with lots of trial and error play with Blender Ztransp and RayMirror... somehow i got this acceptable result by chance ;)

I rendered with internal, but my graphical concept was different than yours (completely non-realistic), so one light + AO was enough. it rendered between 20 sec and 3 min per frame.
I heard Nvidia Gelato is very fast because it renders with CPU, and gives good results.
Other choices could be Kerkythea or Sunflow.
Indigo is said to be rather slow.
I haven't heard so much about the new Yafaray.
I must admit I haven't tried out any of them yet, I am planning to try Gelato and Kerkythea.

You have an eye for detail, I love the atmosphere in the room! Maybe you could introduce the sceene with a few flies buzzing around?

I'we read you storyboard, and no matter what you end up with,(deep or shallow meaning) the story should be simple. Personally I really loved the ida, a hen coocing her own eggs! And thats all I need, I laughed!

About the hen, I wondered about her wing-tips. A realistic hen, is shorter in the front of the wing, and longer in the back, if you see what I mean?

I tried Kerkythea but scene was wrongly interpreded by it, in my case...
Yafray is good because it is very much integrated in the Blender, and there is a new version. Though, render time is x5 comparing to internal render, in this state, and lights must be hardly tweaked.
I think I will try to enhance scene in with Internal shading for now, adding extra lights and tweaks, trying to eliminate a little dark reflections and shadows...

Evengi: you are right, and the new storyboard will be simpyfied a little, the shallow/deep interpretation will be left in details and background, and i would like to have simple story in the front, the idea... I will take that course, especially now when i came to animation, to keep everything more close to point out what is funny in this idea.

Hen: well, someone suggested me (i think Ania did) that i should make hand bones to be builded like in human. Now, i have "human" modeling of wings, drawn in cartoon way; and realistic, bird like cunstitution of hand bones. I guess I will follow that advice.
Yet i am not sure, if I change the order of finger lenghts, that will be reverse to the human constitution... ? I hope I understood you... :shrug:
And great idea with fleas! I will surely add that - if I will have time left, It can raise the atmosfere on a low-cost!

AN update with (mainly) finished Hen. I unwarped the hen in Blender, lots of UV node editing, then painted texture in PS. There is also UV normal map for some sense of texture. I also remodeled some parts of the hen mildly. It is far from realistic, but I love this hybrid between realism and cartoonish, I think it will fit well in story. Some seams are visible and some minor tweaks to do... I will correct that on the go... it is time to start animating!

Here is refined storyboard. It is shorter for some scenes, there is less psyhology in it and less of drama, an more of fun. Movie is divided in 5 parts: Breeding, Carrying eggs, Chrushing eggs, Cooking, 5ton end.
This will be my storyboard and also Recording book, and i will imrpovise on the fly (thanks to the creative freedom of this contest). It is not excluded tat I will change or add something on the fly :).

I have created movie 15sec. first rough animation, I will post result tommorow if render goes fine.

A little slow? Do you really think so? I don't know. One of my biggest complaints with a lot of computer animation is that the action is too frantic. I kind of like it when someone slows things down to establish mood.

I agree with both of you... well my itention that first part of the movie should be easier in tempo (i wanted to give some feeling of tension and expecting)... from the point where i stopped, there will be a lots of dinamic action!

I thik animation and tempo will stay the same in this part(I agree with with VIkram - i dislike too much action if I cannot comprehend it!) but will add some micro-actions or gestures to make it easier...

Here is another, in duration smaller update...15 secs (But the previous animation is also here, now in real-time). This part brings more action as i promised (of course all of thes is WIP, needs adjusting
and micro adjusting :)). Finally I moved chicken out of cage so I feel kind of freedom now :).

Here is wip of animation between taking of eggs till breaking of egg.
When she drops the egg agains the pan, there will be flash of ligh or something (now it looks like she is dropping the egg on the pan.

The matrix slowmotion turnaround is in the test phase... just an idea... what do you think? (as an idea?)

EDIT: I watched my movie for several times and I conclude that I like Matrix turnaround for climax! Only, I should make it 2 times slower, more precise, and with some slow motion flapping with leggs in the air! After that 3 short zooms (as for three eggs) at chicken breaking the egg rapidly, from different angles, like in Kung-Fu movies, and after that i can proceed with normal tempo cooking..)

Hello,

I am working now hard to finish animation. Curently I reached frame 2500, I am just rendering test small size full renders, and i am satisfied with them. Final animation will be finished tommorow or day after, then I will refine it in a day or two. I will leave texture and details tweaking for stage before render, and i plan to render it next week.
I found a man for music and sound fx, and everything goes right i will have final movie to submit next weekend, or friday before it.

And, I have here update on my shading setup. With this I am satisfied: it is Blender internal render with ambiend occlusion, raytracing, aerial lamp and one spot lamp only for halo effect - little ammount of "spice" with volumetric light. I also finished the "Matrix part, breaking of egg, and cooking, about 3/4. Now only finishing of cooking and grand finalle with 5 ton chrush. I hope I will post my final animation (probably without textures AO and rays hopefully till the endo fo this week.

Blender interace is really tricky, but it is true, it is very efficient when you get used to it. It became professional tool through the many years of open-sorce development!
I dont know should i reccomend it or not - best tool is anyway any proffesional tool where you are efficient!

About cracking, infact I have everything done, whole animation, now. My head aches terribly. :( . Of course, there is many errors in animation behind and still have to tweak textures/shading around. Also, need to refine skinning weights...
Well chicken jumps in air, then i have 7-8 secs of "Matrix" style slowmotion, and then 3 short "kung fu finish him!" zoom shots with particles... after that brutal fantasy part, i show already cracked egg, as she drops the yolk inside frying pan. Sorry, no spectacular animation of cracking here, in tehnical sense :) - But I hope it will give some fun instead!

Ok, i hit *final* render button. Each frame will be renderet approx 2-6 mins. t means average 6 mins ;( - thats about 12 days of 24hours rendering. Well. Will render it in sequences of lets say 250 frames, will render everywhere I find deacent machine to use... and hope ill have final render till end of this week!

Reason for slowing down render time is relatively strong Ambient occlusion ad Aerial light. Both of my processor cores are used fully!

Now it is the time to design intro and credits screen, to record some sounds (guess who will be the hen hahaha ?)...

Hey, Nenad. I just pulled out of the competition due to other commitments (though I will finish my animation on my own time). I certainly hope you get done by the deadline, though. I like your piece quite a bit; it has my vote for one of the top spots.

If you have time, you might want to think about baking some of the background ambient occlusion to texture maps. This can save a lot of rendering time. You can also fake ambient occlusion on animated objects like the chicken by using ambient light and negative lights; I find that that technique often works pretty well and is computationally inexpensive.

And about your suggestions: yes they are very good and sane, bu I wont do it now that way... I will surelly suceed to do it as i started, even if it is not efficient! Will be stubborn as a dwarf now :) -I am afraid to experiment more... now when it came to render . But that were very good advices for some other occasion!


Alvin: quad cores, great! Happy you! From the other side, I have monunted all of my horses (home computers) and improvised small rendering farm. Three computers are rendering it right now. Well it is not network render farm, I am rendering segments in avi raw video format, and will put them together at the end. I even render some frames at my work, using passive capabilities of other core.

Haha... I plan even to spread more... maybe on the my wife computer at her work (school library), and greatest achievment would be if I manage to have one class (about 15 PC-s) over night or two. They are poor but hey, 15x50 would be 750 frames :)

And I am monitoring all PC-s via VNC. :twisted:

Good side of the Blender is that it is easy to install it, it is very optimizide application. And of course it is OpenSource, so there is no law violations...

At the present time I have finished 315 frames, and attacked till the frame 800, hope to reach 1000 frames tommorow evetually. I would be lucky to finish all 2760 frames at Saturday!

Meanwhile I am doing some soundfx and start and finish screen... will post my progress.

My three home machines joined in "render farm"... the hole in the central desktop cased PC is for video card which was bigger than case so we cut it :)

I am currently at frame... well will be in the morning at frame 1500 from 2760... not so good in the light that i planned do finish all at Saturday evening... :eek::eek::eek:

Other than that I am assembling sounds and music... I choosed music score, and recorded sound fx with my 5.1 video camera, and then extracted sound from video, cutted it with Wavepad and now I am putting all together in Crystal...

In this momment 5 machines are rendering... i set two machines on my work to render overnight... they are both dualcores... I hope, if there would be not energy collapse :) that I will have all frames ready tomorrow to join with music and upload final thing tommorow evening!

And of course that is the reason why I will not refine anything now... time is gone... I myself have some other errors that I constantly see, but I will left go now this as-is...

BTW, about being geek, pitty that I did havent took screenshot of me connecting with VNC from my work to worstation home, an then from that computer opening another vnc connection to another lool..., to see rendering progres!

This is a movie about hen who likes to eat poached eggs!

Synopsys:
Lucy (hen) lives as a prisoner in a cage, and she lay eggs for the man who bought her from Jajatz Company. Her master is poached egg lover,
and she is too...! She managed to lay three eggs at the time, and she burst out from a cage, prepared the fryer and she cook them.
Unfortunately, she had no idea what fate awaits her...

All models created in Wings 3d
Unwarped with Wings3d, exept hen, she is Unwarped in Blender
Texturized with Photoshop 7
Animated in Blender, about 2800 frames 25 frames per sec.
Rendered in Blender, internal render with Raytracing, Aerial light and few fake lights, Ambient occlusion.
Sound compiled in Kristal Audio Engine

This is really great! You've done a great job modeling the interiour! I also like your textures, maybe you could have been a little more dramatic with the light? The animation has both good and sometimes weaker points, but you manage to tell the story well, and that's not easy. :thumbsup: I like the cartoony style of her running. Especially when she runs for the chair!

This is very strange behavior, and funny!

And what an ending!! He he. :)

Thanks Evengi and Ferx for your comments... kind words! :) . And thanks to everyone else who dropped me a line before. It was great piece of encouragement. Im sorry I had not time to visit all galleries/reply some WIP... I barely managed to finish this on time, before things gone crazy in my everyday job due to the very intense part of the year.

Evengi thanks for your keen observation. We seem to have the same attitude regarding my work done here! I also think that the story is fairly good interpreted, and i spent much of time on scenery. You well noticed ups and downs in animation part! Light is not best part of it, what bothers me a little - it could be more moody with more quality there...

And Ferx mrehehe flying Jordan! I had a different idea in my head, but now when you say it, I say OK :) :) .

May ittention was to have Matrix/Kung fu sequence there: combining "high elegancy" of Matrix, and crude shots from B production KungFu movies :)

I am astonished. I dont' have words about the animation. When the hen breaks the egg... the matrix style... the explosion... the camera movement... The dinamic of the short movie it is brilliant. The velocity of the actions. Good, very good. And the making of... with a lot of detail... Great, great. Very good job.

Your support was really precious thing during the creation process. Somehow it is easier when you have a public who encourages you, as well as you do to them. I guess we all came out with greater experience from this competition.

I am satisfied by establishing contacts here at CGSociety in such manner. Also, it is a good way to learn about other people workflow. I mean: all the stuff that motivate us to work and compete, all things that prevent us to work as we might (work, obligations of many kinds). Excitement, enduraance, sleeples hours in the night :) .

So, after this few lines of poetry, let me inform you, if I can, that I am going to submit my movie also on domestic/international and highly esteemed animated movies festival here in Zagreb.
