Howdy !
try to export your model and it's animation in any format that maya can export and max import and that will retain animation data...
.3ds saves animation data, maybe .obj too.. maybe you'll need a specific import plug for max, look down at www.scriptspot.com.
Else you could try any translation software, i know 3dExplorer from Right Hemisphere reads mesh animation, maybe others do as well.

use the .fbx file format designed by Kaydara which is free and designed exactly for this purpose of interchanging animation from one 3d program to another

yep fbx is the PERFECT connection between any programs we tried Softimage to max and backwards the same with maya not more breaks in the pipeline with external artists thats just great... if you have rigged you model in maya and use fbx you can get it WITH the skinweights to max... ok the mayaspecific ik's and stuff aren't there but a basic rig with all weights, uv's smoothinggroups and stuff are there... Kaydara just rocks...
i dunno but there has to be a third party to do such great steps between software why can't discreet, a|w, newtek, avid and so on just talk with each other to get a standard??

FBX does a pretty impressive job. Admittedly it's the best converstion plugin I have seen. However, when you go from Maya to Max it screws up all the shaders when you open the file in Max. The UV's come in just fine but the shader iself comes out really bright. When you try and amend or reset the shader/material it won't go back to it's default state. It took me a lot of fiddling to get it to behaive properly. In the end I went back to OBJ export and plugged in my shaders manually.
Anyone else notice this and is there a way around it???
BTW, FBX also forgets the out of range settings on your F Curves too.
Thanks,
L
