View Full Version : whats goin on
mark_battista 03-30-2003, 01:04 PM hi, i'm tryna model low poly but a few things are puzzling me. Im sure I never used to get this problem, I keep getting like faceted faces and its driving me crazy. Just wondering if anybody can help. Ive extruded from a cylinder, that you can see was smooth to begin with, the extrusion has the same number of segments etc but it isnt smooth. Why ever not?
help would be much appreciated
thx

Howdy !
Not quite sure but to me it looks like a smoothing groups issue ?
Looks like your base cylinder has a smoothing group applied while the extruded part for some reason have none ?

aye thats what i thought but it doesn't. Smooth modifier fixes the problem but max seems to be doing this with every model i make at the moment. Hmmmm wonder if I've hit a key somewhere by accident? whilst smoothmod is a short term fix i need a long term one.

the cylander ocbject has specific smoothing groups pre defined. ass you add geometry it has no way of knowing where to lay edges and where to smooth.
in face mode of either edit poly or edit mesh you can go to the very bottom of the menu and select any face and see in the table what smoothing group its in.
good luck!
