This is a piece that I thought might be fun. It's kind of hard to tell what's going on at the moment. But basically there is a knight and a fire breathing hummingbird.

Cool idea, and it looks like you've got a pretty good pose layed out for the knight already. Hope to see more soon.

Here is a first stab at some colors.

I started adding some photographic elements and developing the colors. Now for the first time you can get an idea of what this is really going to look like in the end.

It definitely looks like you've established your idea well.
Just a couple of ideas, mainly about the hummingbird.
For one, I think it needs to look scarier. Because it has sucha long beak, its hard to see that he is the one breathing the fire at first. I think pointing his eye direction closer to the knight, or giving him a more cartoony expression could help, but definitely try some different options, you have the talent to pull it off.
Secondly, the hummingbird just needs to look more integrated into the background. At this point it REALLY sticks out. Maybe use some of the colours from the BG in the feathers, and maybe add more warm highlights from the fire.
Keep it up buddy

I agree with killer's points, i think it would look more natural if the fire being expelled from his beak did so from the entire length of the beak not just the end. Also to help intergrate the bird into the scene as killer has mentioned you could throw in some lost feathers being singed and what not. Keep it up!

Thanks for all your advice. I've made some changes based on it as you can see....I think it's much better. I have also done more work on it overall. There is still more to do of course but any feedback is welcome.
Hey Charles, really nice update, I like the flame effect, very nice!!
I think that the hummingbird need to be shooting to the knight's shield, that can center the action in the two characters. The bird shooting to the rigth and out of the canvas, guide the eyes out of your painting. Your perspective is frontal, and the bird putting fire over the knight and with the extended wings can make a really great cross composition, only a comment:) Keep the good work and waiting for more updates

Thanks for the great feedback. It's been right on. Unfortuantly for me that means a lot more work to do...oh well, that's the point of this right? Here's my new sketch. I think it is more dynamic by far. Let me know what you think.
Hey Charles, great change!! and really more dynamic sketch and now the action is center in the two characteres, great!! l like lot !! I think you have a really good one with this, and looking forward for updates. Cheers mate!

Here is my current progress. I still have work to do on the hummingbird and the knight. And I'm not sure the hummingbird stands out enough. The background will have a bit more details in the end as well.

Impressive  I like the dynamic pose
How did you painted the fire? it looks great.
IMHO the chain is far too big and heavy, maybe a thiner chain attached to the leg will be enought, no?
Anyway verry nice progress, I`m looking forward for more updates :bounce:

The fire effect is actually from some photo references...so not much painting involved. The chain is probably too thick. However, I want to convey the feeling that this is a powerfal beast so I don't want to go too thin on the chain. And I really like the neck coller.

I just put up a hummingbird feeder recently at my window. I have always enjoyed birds. Hummingbirds are particularly interesting. They are all around us but are so quick we barley ever notice them. They are so tiny and yet so fast and maneuverable. I think that if there were a giant hummer it would be quite formidable and frightening. (Even without the fire.)

Very hot image! The fire is very energetic much like the hummingbird. The render of the hummingbird is very well executed and I love the action and strength depicted in it's captured pose. Very lovely idea as well as a very lovely piece my friend. I wish you the very best!
