RobertoOrtiz 08-15-2007, 12:43 PM Animator Ralph Bakshi talks to ASIFA Hollywood about his opinions on the CG field.
Quote:
"I encourage CGI artists to think of themselves as animators and build upon animation's rich history instead of reinventing it bit by bit. Animation is animation. Pencils and computers are only tools'

interesting read. I would've been sad for Bakshi had he went the "back in the day we did cel.. this new fangled 3D stuff is bunk!". He makes an interesting point about staleness in the industry. Just look at all of the talking animal movies that have come out in the theaters over the past 5 years. It's just about cookie-cutter now.

Great read. I was never too much of a fan of the rotoscoped look in Bakshi films even before I knew what rotoscoping was. The actual animation was sometimes a lot rougher too but they were really cutting edge in their content, breaking out of the animated storybook mold. I think he hits the nail of the head and I look forward to the second part of the interview. the animation industry could use a director like him right about now.
Not that he was the only one who tried to produce animated movies tackling adult topics, but he clearly understood that animation is a medium for any subject and not just children's topics. I can still remember seeing his version of Lord of the Rings in the theater. It wasn't intricate fluid animation, but it was powerfully evocative. He did things in animation few others have tried. I still love his movie Wizards.
