Hi everybody,

For our final project in our final year of study at Humber College (http://www.humber3d.ca/), a group of students, including myself, decided to work on a collaborative project. The goal was a two and a half minute animation that would be achieved through operating as a full production, with our program coordinator being our producer.

We followed schedules, deadlines, and pipelines. We had job descriptions, production meetings, and rushes. And of course we experienced problems, delays, and dismissals. In the end, the project was completed by the final deadline, which was SIGGRAPH 2007.

The short is based on a classic story and is about an overly curious wide mouthed frog who likes to explore and ends up getting himself into a little trouble. It is intended for younger children and has received some good feedback so far.

I hope you all enjoy our work, and we are very excited to hear what everybody thinks of it, so please let us know!

Good film, I like the unique way that the mouths are animated/modeled.

What is it about though? (not what happens)

fun reel, and nice design. I love how the top part of the frog's head moves while he's hopping, adds to the humor of the piece.

only crit I really see is when the frog is on the pad, the feet anim doesn't match with the pad anim so it looks a bit odd. also I would have exaggerated the mouth movements a bit more as most of the time the characters look like they're mumbling, and they only roughly match the lipsync. the general gestures of the characters are quite good, they just appear to need some fine tuning.

good work!

Great job! That is a ton of work, and very hard to pull off all the different facets of such a project. There were a couple of things that bothered me, though.

For some reason, I found the disconnected jaws to be rather distracting. The transition from the story teller to flying into the book was a bit jarring. And I'm sure time constraints played a part, but I would have liked to see the narrator at the end, instead of just staring at "The End" during the final narration.

Those are just minor points, though, and shouldn't take away from the great accomplishment you've achieved. Congratulations!

RobertoOrtiz: Thanks! Its a real honour to be on the front page!

Paul McLaughlin: Thanks!I'm not sure I understand your question, but the story is an aesop fable that has been slightly re-worked to accomodate our intended premise. The premise of our story was to "live and learn". I'm glad you liked it!

Drakaran: The head lagging behind in the jump is actually what sold us on the idea of the detached heads and jaws! We wanted something that would really set our designs apart, and that was something we had never seen before. Of course, this raised a challenge for doing the lip syncing because we needed to find. The animators all have worked very hard to get it to the point where it is currently at and might go back, when there is time, to push them even further. Glad you liked it, and appreciate your comment!

pearson: Thank you! It was quite an undertaking for all of us. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into, and still aren't too sure how we got it finished! It seemed like we were behind schedule until the day we finished. Which part of the transition into the book bothered you? Would you mind going into a bit more detail? It was a tricky little shot to do, so it would be great to get some feedback specific to it. And we would like to go back and animate the narrator for the "THE END" sequence when we have time. Right now everybody is busy preparing their demo reels and looking for jobs. Thanks again!

Kostadamus: Thanks Kosta, there were more than four of us working on the project though. The four listed at the bottom of the original post were just the only ones with websites. I will post the credits as seen at the end of the animation to make sure everybody gets their proper kudos. Hope everything is going well for you, and thanks again.

I think the problem I had with the transition to the book goes something like this.

When the dragonfly is introduced, he is large on the screen and grabs the viewer's attention. The camera completely ignores him and he becomes very small. Both of these are clues to the viewer that the dragonfly is not important, plus the flower starts talking, so the dragonfly is completely forgotten.

While watching the flower, all of a sudden the camera starts to move for no apparent reason. Then the camera is zooming into the book. It's not until after the white flash that I realized that the camera was following the dragonfly. And those few seconds of confusion completely pulled me out of the short.

I'm not sure what the solution is, but it seems to me that if the dragonfly were introduced later, and the camera followed it from the beginning, then the zoom into the book would be communicated better to the viewer.

Anyway, congrats for finishing it, and good luck with the job hunt!

Excuse me, but I have to say this. It's an old joke and it's told pretty poorly. He's not supposed to introduce himself as a widemouth frog, that spoils the punchline. The design of the floating mouths not only establishs weird animation, but it doesn't work with the joke/story! Also the pace is too slow and the camerawork and editing are fairly unsolid.

That's a lot of work put in a weak story.

pearson: I know what you mean now. The dragonfly is not important through most of the dialogue and we did want the attention to be taken away from him and placed on the narrator, but we could have done a better job at re-introducing him before the camera movement. I can understand how that might get confusing for viewers, especially with all that is going on in that short bit of time. This is something else I'd like to revisit now when I have the time. Thanks for pointing that out!

Breinmeester: We are aware there is lots of room for improvement, there always is and always will be. We all learned a lot from working on this project and already feel we could achieve a much much better finished product had we started it today. Sorry you didn't like it, and thank you for your comment.

mastone: Thank you!

Wonderer: You should check out Stephan Perreault's demo reel. He designed and animated a lot of the characters. You can find the thread here http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=154&t=523337

I stand corrected, 5 men job not 4, not counting directors and animators, designers/lay out artists and such, just from CG perspective . TD guy, Lighting/rendering/compositing guy, modelling 2 guys, and an environmental artist, and a buncha criss-crossing. Tons of work, glad you pulled it off and no one dropped off while working on it. Has a lot of nice subtle touches (well the flies not so subtle after the cut -- the cut seems a tad purposeless to me), and camera angles and lighting/comping could've been pushed a tad further but from a sheer amount of work and a set deadline, it turned out really pretty well. I'd try getting rid of the white frame on transition on the book though, it is a bit of a jarring transition that leaves an impression of a missing frame, but i'm nitpicking.

See ya guys around.
