Hey guys,
I am mainly a Lightwave user, but I was recently asked to possibly do some character animation in Max. I was wondering if someone could direct me to real good set up tutorial, using bones in Max 5. An ideal set up would include, IK, elbow and knee pointers, and any tips on keeping the playback fast would be great. Also any workflow tutorials or advice for animating characters for games would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot!

Here's a very good one by sergio mucino...

and also, (I believe Michael Comet wrote it) the one in the manuals (also in online documentation) is a very good one, too.

thanks for the help but maybe someone has another suggestion this one seems more like concepts rather than actual application. Maybe it's just my inexperience with max though.

i dunno if the fbs exporter works for xsi but if it works... make your animation in lw and export it to max... you won't have the ik's but all your animation with simple bonesrotation...

Not sure what you're after, but just to do a regular IK chain in max with elbow or knee pointers is pretty straightforward.

Create your bone chain (arm or leg). Select the parent bone of the chain. In the Animation menu, click on HI/IK solver. The cursor turns into a 'dragging' line. Drag it to the 'nub' bone which was automatically created when you made your chain. This will set up your IK. To make your elbow pointers work, make a null object (dummy object or point helper in max) and position in directly behind and back from the elbow. Go to the motion panel and under "IK Properties" click on "Pick Target". Then in the viewport, pick your null object. This will become the point at which your elbow tries to look.

Sorry if I'm being simplistic, but I'm not sure what you need. If you have access to max right now, look in the online help tutorials; they're excellent and tell you everything you need to know about the basics of setting up IK and entire rigs.

As for speed. Bones in max are raging fast (unless you put a lot of script controllers and expressions and stuff on them, then they get really slow). But basic IK stuff and regular wire parameters are really fast.

Good luck.

Also the tutorial I mentioned, Sergio Mucinos' tutorial, is a step by step on how to make a complete rig in max. Give it another gander. It's really good. Granted, it does have some conceptual/theory ideas, but it leads you right by the hand into building a rig in max.
