I'm getting to the end of this model (yay) and I'm going to put on fur. It's a cartoon monkey. I happened to think that if I put on the fur and style it first, when I do a dynamic simulation it will affect the combing of the fur and I may have to restyle.

So, should I comb the fur first
or
style the hair, run the simulation, and comb the fur?

see, there won't be any relation between hair and fur if u won't combine the hair simulation effect with fur. but if u want to give a fur a proper direction and also dynamics effect on it by hair, then u have to switch the hair simulation from static to all follicles. means after giving the hair simulation with fur, just switch it to static and it won't effect the direction of fur and when u'll change it to all follicle, it's ovious that the dynamic effect on fur and it won't maintain the combing direction. and first give the direction to fur with combing. try it, it may help u

I say throw out the dynamics and stick to static. Unless your monkey is Rapunzel, no one is going to notice the dynamics. You are better off spending cpu cycles rendering huge amounts of fur and get a really nice look and use the skeleton animation to get the job done rather than spending more time doing the dynamics.
Keeping it simple gives you more mileage in the long run...as creative-creature suggested, spend time designing the look and styling.

You're probably right. But......

This is being made for a short and to be viewed on a large size screen. I'm kinda worried about collision detection at the least for medium to close shots?

I'm not sure if I understood creative-creature fully. Is creative-creature saying there is a static and all follicle option and that in order to keep the combing I will want the static option? Like I said, I just sorta want it for body collisions and I won't need it for every shot.

Thank you for the heads up as well guys!! I will probably take up your advice and keep it simple, if not it will be for troublesome shots.

Thanks,

Scott

buddy, when u r applying hair curve on fur for dynamics effect, checkout attribute box of hairsystem, on the top in simulation method, four options r there, in that one is static and another is all follicles.u can switch it or set it between static and follicles. or do one thing, in which scene in ur project, movement is not required for fur, don't apply hair curve with it and only apply it when u need fur movements. i hope u can understand what i want to say. try it
