Hi all,
I'm at Microsoft Gamefest in Seattle, where we just released the XSI 6 Mod Tool! The Mod Tool is a free version of XSI for non-commercial game creation. It integrates with Microsoft XNA.
We did a joint tech demo with Microsoft on stage showing what's possible with the Mod Tool. Here's a screenshot of the tech demo.
http://www.leonardteo.com/uploads/softimage/modtool_beforeafter.jpg
More information including limitations, etc. are all available from the Mod Tool web page (http://www.softimage.com/products/modtool/).
You can download the Mod Tool now from here (http://www.softimage.com/products/modtool/).
Enjoy!

I love Softimage! I like they're business approach, as well as their tool. I'll probably end up buying essentials eventually.

I like how you can switch to the "pro mode" - recommended for people who've used full versions before.

Correct me if im wrong, but i thought you have to pay a membership to use the XNA(to upload the content to the Box) with the X360? (PC is no problem i know)

The XNA addon comes with a new Model Importer and Processor that integrates in the XNA GSE framework. It supports .XSI, COLLADA and .PIC (Softimage Image). Make sure you install the XNA GSE plugin (found on the start page when you click the XNA icon).
Hope that helps.

very cool move from XSI. with autodesk owning a huge chunk of the game industry, stuff like this really helps XSI get into game artists hands and maybe even convert some studios.
downloading now.

This is great!
I wish for more games to mod - if Softimage is working with Microsoft, it would be nice to make exporters for Flight Simulator X and upcoming Train Simulator from MS (hint hint  )
Downloading now!

Just curious, I'm in the process of buying XSI Essentials to do movies and games, would there be any point to using the Mod tool also, or does XSI have all the features of the Mod tool in it?

Q: How much does XNA Game Studio Express cost? Is there a difference between Windows and Xbox 360 development?
A: Visual C# Express, the XNA Game Studio Express tools and runtime environment for Windows are all FREE. To develop, debug and/or play games on the Xbox 360, however, you must have an XNA Creators Club (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/xna/bb219592) subscription purchased directly from the Xbox Live Marketplace. Two subscription options are available: $99 per year or $49 per four months.

Best thing is to make a game on the PC first (using XNA is free for this), then pay for the XBOX membership when you know you can actually do it.
XNA makes game dev easier but not "easy". If your only experience is being a game artist then you really won't be making a game with XNA anytime soon (on your own at least) so paying the subscription would be a waste of money (However, Torque X by Garage Games will make it quite a bit easier for artists to contribute and comes free with the subscription now - but you still need some knowledge of C# to make a REAL game).
What the Mod tool does is make it much easier to generate content for the pipeline.

cool !
is there another version with "no" limitations like this ?

Exported geometry is limited to 64000 triangles

Maximum resolution for Ultimapper maps is 512x512.
Images output using the hardware renderer are limited to a maximum resolution of 512x512.

I am trying to download but everytime i get a file not found error... I was wondering if anyone else is getting this?
This is great news! I'm an XSI user myself, and recommend it to everyone.

Yeah, by purchasing a license (Foundation, Essentials, or Advanced) or getting an academic license, which is an Advance license.

but what about a download link to the stand-alone addons(xna eporter) for those with regular xsi licences?

yeah thats true, the price for xna isn't that bad at all.
Is it just me?
Anyone having problems finding assets from the Netview training materials?
First I can't find the texture for the dynomite because the Noesis Database files didn't install. Then I can't get the Valve content to load because "Source SDK content is not installed" according to the error dialog that keeps popping up.
Uhm ... I checked. My Source SDK is installed. I can use Hammer just fine.
What gives? Bad ModTool install? I'm stupid? What?!?

I haven't had time to look for the Noesis stuff but the Valve scene file launch is working fine for me. I was getting the same error until I opened up Steam and launched the SDK with HL2 selected as the current game. Scenes load up fine then.

I was almost thinking, that Softimage removed chains from Mod Tool :)

I am curious about this too, because I do have a FND license and this would be a nice addition. I am wanting to learn how to make games using XNA but don't want to dl MOD TOOL when I already have XSI :). Will there be an addon?

Yes the standalone add-on for XSI will be available shortly. We're just packaging it up and will put it on Softimage.com asap.

Leonard - is it possible to have updated version of ActorX too? Current version exports .ase files, but .psk export crashes both XSI 6 & Mod Tool too.

I already have Foundation 5 and downloaded this just to check it out. I can't get the mod tool to run. I keep getting a pop up that says failure to save scene and then it shuts down. My foundation version working just fine though. HOpefully when I have time to check later I can see if I'm doing something wrong.

All assets for Noesis tutorials are in \Addons\ModTool\Noesis_QS_Database\ folder.
The Lamp model is there as well :)
A simply brilliant idea. :)

It is really great to have tools like this for XNA. XNA does making coding games a much quicker proposistion. We will just have to see how well it scales for larger project, time will tell. Tools like this just add to the excitement.
