Title: Dusk
Name: Raine Kuusi
Country: Finland
Software: Photoshop

A simple matte painting I did for the d'Artiste book. Not sure if it gets in :D

Inspiration from Lord of the Rings again, the beacons scene (without beacons though, the mountains were the thing for me). I tried to break my habit of just backlighting everything and avoiding directional light. So this was about stepping out from my comfort zone - the best way to learn and to embarrass myself :D

This is beautiful. I would be compleatly shocked if this didn't make into the matte painting book. Shocked I tell you!!!
I love the color and detail. And you had the guts to not put a castle in there! Well done!

Beautiful image. I was wondering if you had any in-progress images. It would be great to get a peek at your process.

thanks guys for all the comments!

thenextside - thank you! I just hope it gets in.. because then I get a free copy of the book, and I want the book badly because DUSSO is one of the authors. And you're right, castle scenes are done to death, I'd rather just show mountains. Even if it's "just" mountains then. I hope it's at least more than reality -mountains.

AlonChou - Thanks, I'm a big fan of your work..

boutiquecraft - Thank you!

bearfoot - thanks, glad you liked!

Artist-Lounge - I hope too :D thanks for the nice compliment..

CyborgJA - thank you, nice works in your gallery too!

Oscen - thanks a lot : )

nicklasholmgren - thanks man!

IngaNielsen - I'm happy about the colors, so glad you like them! I have to admit though that my painting is pale in comparison to Middle-Earth described in books and illustrated in the films..

sedART - thank you..

gusss - thanks so much! Kiitos and obrigado! :)

scorned1 - glad that you liked it, thanks!

DanielAlves - thank you!

Littlelizard - thanks, loved your "Enchanted Tree"!

ZedMarlin - happy holiday, cool to hear you enjoyed my experimental lighting ;)

Smartypants - I didn't save any in-process versions. I started with a sketch for colors and basic layout, gradually detailing and adding photographs on top and blending them into painting and to other photos with careful hand painting. This being a matte painting, many of the main elements are partially photos, the main peak for example is about 50% painting and 50% photos.

vooyen - thanks, that was the goal, to make it at least somewhat photo-realistic : )

bao - thanks, it means a lot coming from you

JamrozGary - thanks a lot..

Hey Raine, I caught this looking through your gallery, didn't know you were working on something like this... it's exquisite! I even set it up as my desktop background

Good job man,

Nice job. The colors and atmosphere are well done. But, in my opinion the lighting is inconsistent from the clouds to the mountains, it's like they have different light sources. I'd also say give the moon more sunlight along the right side so it isn't as flat.

Keep it up.

That is looking sweet!! Beautyfull colors :) I remember you from sijun and I really like all of your works. Imho your biggest mountain in focal point is a bit too contrasty, even if its beyond clouds and haze I cant feel as its farther away than near rocks, and around this mountain are strange dirty smokes, dark form left, light from right. Its really subtle and you shouldnt worry about it but I thought I will write it anyway - all for good :) Congrats! I hope to see it in Matte ainting 2 book

I agree, I just didn't have time to fix everything. I think I submitted this 20 mins before the deadline so I had to just think like fine, whatever, I'm sending this in as it is.

Lovely work! Good luck on the entry, there is some really tough competition :)

Have you ever visited mattepainting.org? I haven't seen this work on there, but it would be great to see you posting on there. The more matte painters the better :)

Nice work, congrats!
