The Animator and the Seat (requires divx) (http://www.ringling.edu/%7Eedrobile/)
This was my senior thesis for graduation at Ringling College of Art + Design. Crits always welcome! Enjoy!

Really great short.. Awesome job on the animation, I loved the timing.. especially in that shot where the chair is sneaking up behind the animator!
Congratulations to you sir for finishing this great piece!

nah this is terrible! If I were to ever see you in person, I would slap you for making such a terrible short film... kidding kidding! great work eric, hope things are going well in Jersey. See ya when you get back out here to LA!

Wow, a really masterful short! How did you rig the chair?
Drobile
08-14-2007, 08:20 PM
Thanks richard and glacierise! I used the awesome elastik plugin for the chair's legs, saved my life it did. The rest of the stuff was standard rigging procedures that made me want to bash my head against things.
As for you Mr. Parrish... it's on. I hear they're working you hard over there at R+H! They better be. ;)

No, you're right...it is a documentary. Based on a horrific true story. Hehe, the chair legs were rigged with the Elastik plugin:
http://michael-hutchinson.com/downloads/index.php
and the arms were just a standard ik/fk arm setup, but with lots of clusters added on top for added bendyness and shape.

Hey Eric,
I liked your short, really colorful and softbodied fun cartoony short.
The part at the end with the chair forcing him to animate had alot of Freudian undertones, getting bitch slapped and such.
So you at R&H still? I have a few friends that got hired there recently, animators, I guess they are hiring a bunch of kids, probably paying you guys in Doritos and dreams :)

Thanks for posting it.
I loved it when I saw it @ SIGGRAPH, and I am glad we can share it with our members
Plugged!

Woohoo! Thanks Roberto!
And Colin, I had to tone down the Freudian aspects quite a bit. The original story was a love story, where the Chair wouldn't let the animator leave because he/she/it was in love with him. The ending involved quite a bit of stroking...and while I was going for uncomfortable, it was probably a bit too much. ;)
Thanks for the kind words! I'm not at R+H anymore but I just accepted a job offer at Reelfx yesterday. Here I come Dallas!

Me and my friends have watched your short film, and we're all laughing to death : it's so true. The chair is really an entity that's made of a mix of glue and passion. This film will be for sure a good warning for peoples that want to enter in animation industry  And again, congratulation.:applause::thumbsup:

Dood, fact is I couldn't figure out why this one (and Codehunters) wasn't in the Electronic Theater at siggraph. You should've seen the place in the animation theater-- by the time the guy breaks down everyone was howling. I think you almost broke Roberto's brain, he could hardly breathe. :D

Hey man ! This is some great job you've done there ! Very good in deed in every aspect of movie making.
You sure got my Respect .
There is one cut though, that makes me want to critic. The one right after the character starts to climb on shelfs. 180 degrees cam switch man. Never works. I would flip this shot horizontally at list.
Keep up

nice job love the models, scene and the rendering speachless with the flow of the animation.
Actually left me wanting to see more of this character and his job. 5 stars.

Whoa! I could REALLY relate to the character in this short... That... sort of scares me.
As soon as he said 'I used to like bears' I already knew what he was on about even before the shot of the screen (btw, 'DUHH', nice little things like that all around!). It's true that animation can sometimes be a love/hate relationship and there are really some days where I feel like "Agh, **** it!". Good thing I don't have an evil chair to keep be from going to take a much-needed break :)
Great animation, suprisingly accurate lipysync (nice to see someone who can pull it off for a change) and very nice stylization and finish. Superb short!
Cheers!

I second that, I 'felt' something odd about that shot but I couldn't put my finger on it... In Spain (AFAIK) we call it an 'Axis skip'. Millionder's totally right, plus it could create a couple of seconds of disorientation, enough to make a handful of the audience get sucked out of the short all of a sudden.
Cheers!

Great short :)
I loved pausing and looking at all the little pictures on the walls. Ice Gauge 2 haha. I can't figure out exactly what's going on in the cars poster, and beneath that there seems to be a rather peculiar pencil drawing :P
great stuff.
