View Full Version : Question about reactor water combined with normal objects
Arnage 03-29-2003, 08:04 PM I'm trying to use a reactor water system to simulate waves created by a moving boat, but i want to animate the boat manually, is this possible? I tried adding the boat to the rigidbody collection and i tried makeing the boat the terrain for the water, but it didn't work. Does anyone know a solution or isn't this possible with reactor?

*bump*
I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me out...
Howdy !
I think (might be wrong) that it's possible, just create your water and boat, assign the boat as a rigid body (but not as landscape for the water system, the landscape is used in the case you'd have a pool or environment for your water system to wave/ripple on it); then animate your boat's motion, i guess you could also use a path constraint, then launch the simulation, you should have the boat creating waves in it's trail...
Just don't forget to apply weight to your boat.

thanks for the reply, though it still doesn't work. When i use a keyframe animation it gets overwriten by the simulation and when i use a path constraint the simulation seems to ignore it and animates the water as if the boat just lies still, but the boat will still move along the path...
Yup, reactor might not be a good solution for such purpose; i'd say realwave probably can achieve that very well...
Else have you considered using a plane binded to ripple or wave space warp, linked to the boat maybe, and some particles to create splashes and droplets ?

Your quick
I know realwave and it looks very good, but to buy it for this one scene is a bit expencive.
The spacewarp option does sound good, i'll give that one a try, thanks!
I just thought i could also just drop a lot of invisible objects in the water there where the boat is going, so i'll try that to and see which solution gives the best results.
But again, thanks for your help and quick replies mouj!
lol ! looks like we're both quite quick : )
indeed dropping objects could be a solution, but i fear it might give some weird results here and there...guess it all depends what you intend to use it for in the end.
and yes, realwave would be quite expensive for one shot ! :p

1)Create The water spacewarp
2)Create a plane and bind the spacewarp to it
3)Put the object-boat as rigid body
4)Check UNYIELDING at properties to this object
5)Animate the object-boat
6)Launch the simulation

Thanks reality3D, that's exactly what i tried to do! I never noticed that checkbox

that is good ,i really love that answer, i used max 3 for a while and gave up and went to lightwave,i got a demo version of max 5 and figured to give it a chance to see if it has evolved any,and so far i am impressed.reactor is giving me trouble though maybe its because i am not to well versed with max but the manual/tutorial file for reactor just give you the very basics, nothing like this thanx reality3d.and good question arnage
