View Full Version : creating a helix screw
snot_nose 03-29-2003, 06:46 PM can any1 tell me what is the best technic for creating a helix screw?
I tried using a cylinder with a lot of hight segments, extruded one line and apllied a twist modifier.
but i got a very ugly screw.
does any1 know any other way? or maybe a tut?

Your approach sounds, well sound...
Did you also try a taper and perhaps meshsmoothing the result?
You may want to creat a helix primitive, 3D trace it (because the prim has linear interpolation) and do some knarly spline cage modeling to get the quality you need.
Another idea is to extract the splines from the edges of your cylinder with all the mods applied, then use surface tools or spline cage techniques thereby saving a lil time in creating the spline cage.
I would also do a google search for 3D file formats (dxf, dwg, 3ds, obj, etc..) of the obj you need.

Well, hello Tal (Are you the same Tal from Goldman?)
Anyway while trying to create a screw myself I figured that twisting a cylinder will give unwanted result but twisting a highpoly box will give some nice helix edges (If there is such a thing).... Well I don't really remmember what I got out of my experiments but try to add a Twist to a box and see if it helps you...
