Hi everyone,
My name is Aasa Ooraikul. I just finished my demo reel called "A Summoner" from Vancouver Film School so i'd like to share it with you guys. I used a mix between Renderman for Maya and Mental Ray. Your comments are most welcome. Thanks:)

jimmywurx7 : Thank you so much:)
tinitus : Yes, i got inspiration from Final Fantasy and World of Warcraft
nostlagia32 : That creature took longer time to render than the girl hehehe.
j005182540 : Sawasdee krub:D I did everything from concept art to composite...except rigging and some animation shots that i cooperated with my friends.

Aasa, amazing work! Your reel turned out amazing, and it was great to see it’s evolution during the last three terms. What kills me is that it only took you three days to texture that environment - I still can’t get over that. If you haven’t been offered a job yet, I bet you will soon.

Great work,

Sean

Awesome work! I haven't seen as many comments about it, but the set is fantastic. And only three days to texture it I read? What is your secret, lots of coffee?? Thats a lot of work for 3 days!

Anyways, congrats on a piece very well done. Be proud of it.

Like many have said, you've done a fantastic job on the modeling and abient animation work, like the ropes bobbing with the water and the dress movement, though I think the elf character's movements seemed a bit too fast. Perhaps it was just me, but it seemed as if she was a character in a scene that was be "fast forward-ed", particularly when petting the dragon, it was like a hand tap rather than real interaction. All in all, you've done a great modeling real, though I think you need to work on your pacing for animation improvement.

this is one big beautiful work! I was totally speechless. Wonderful! 10 stars!
That girl with the small snake-like creature on her hand. That scene reminded me of one part from the World of Warcraft - The Burning Crusade 's trailer. hahaa..
I'm a big fan of dragons. Your cool dragon design really blow me away! I love your dragon and I wish I could animate your dragon so much. hahaa..

I was like jaw-dropping after watching it. I love everything in the showreel.
The only comment would be, the elf princess hair.. seems very less/little from the back and it looks a little unnatural. Just personal opinion, but very very good job anyway! 5 stars!

Wow...This is the best time in my life. Never expect to be on front page at all. Thank you for all of your comments and glad that you like my reel:) you guys rock!

Chemix: I absolutely agree with you but that time i had 2 months left with no animation so i kinda rush for animation.
The Funimator: Thank you The Funimator. It's WOW and FF that inspired me:P
arizaga: Hehehe obviously my plan right now is to get a job:P:P
NyneDown: Glad you like my reel
ldgree: Cheers man. This is the first time i used displacement tho:P
Gunners: I agree with you Gunners. I get into hair when i was in last term(2months left). First i tried Maya Hair, then shave and hair cut but i didn't get what i want. Tweak it like almost a month and then found out that i don't have time anymore so i decide to used polygon instead:P I wish i have more time to tweak it tho.

the modeling and skinning on this work is really top notch. you really put a lot of love into this piece adding in detail that isn't even used(like the glowing glyphs on the dragon's horns). I love the movement of the dress in that one closeup where you see her feet.

unfortunately, there is no effect of back-wind from the dragon showing when he comes in close (I might have even added some particles getting blown about just to add that extra bit of realism). such a large creature would produce some pretty big wind effects. when he comes in for the close up with the princess, his neck should bob just a bit to show he's flying. I'm not sure you animated his whole body in that shot, as it looks like you only animated the head for it.

her hair also seems to need some reworking as it appears almost totally uneffected and lies basically still in all shots. well, really, the hair also seems a bit sparse and lacks body as well.

EDIT: there is a strange focus effect in the closeup of the princess and the dragon as well. if something's being conveyed between them, maybe there could be a better visual way of presenting it?

it's a beautiful piece, truly.

really great work and one of the best VFS reels i've seen. It seems like the quality of VFS reels lately have been going up, i guess technological advancement and more talent coming in like you is what is contributing to this.

I applaud you for your work ethic and diligence to have your visual elements animated, including adding some slight visual effects work as well. Your work is pretty much at par with the final fantasy cinematics and your style of work as well. The only thing missing from your work to reaching this quality are some better lighting, fake or real GI, advance shaders and some more post-production effects. I know you used renderman but what is the light setup you used for this?(GI, Final gathering, normal lighting?) Have you ever tried a fake hrdi lightrig like aks_lightray for maya, or a dome light, you might find better lighting effects and softer shadows out of this.

Jaw dropped...

Congratulations, one of the best reels I've seen, top top top !
Presentation was jaw-dropping, modelling is fantastic, everything on this piece is awesome.

Somehow the star system sometimes isn't enough, its over a 5 stars. Make a great still of this work so we can have it printed one day on Exposé or similar, I believe it has good chances of been approved for such.

first of all, great work! congrats on your great reel! It was very cinematic and had a ver VFS flare to it---great work! (i was 3d59) My major crit is the intro. (I had one of the longest intros in recent memory for a vfx student-and was told to change it several times) I love the LOTR style intro...but after working for a few studios now, id ask you to please cut in some teaser clips of your scene, models, abstract closeups...anything. Casey K. is a wicked designer and could help you with that editing process...but i have met plenty of recruiters that would have turned it off...since they didnt see any models for the first 5-15 secs?? (not sure about the time)

Such a great reel, and it would be a complete shame if someone didnt get to see the whole thing!!!

Good luck in your job exploration!
