TurbiX 08-12-2007, 07:59 PM Hi all!
I'm a bit scared!! There are so much great artists around and i'm just one of the beginners eheh I'm opening my sketchbook couse i want to improve my poor skills and i need to be stimolated!! Yeah, that's the problem, most of the time i feel really bad looking at my sketches.
I'm italian and i've never studied arts or something like that. Only recently i've started painting and i've bought "The Structure of a man" DVDs (still at face's muscles). I'll start a design's school in october so i don't know how much time i'll have for sketches in the future.
Hope you can help me with suggestions and critiques.
There are my sketches in chronological (hope this is correct in english lol) order.
And sorry for my english :P

Hey Marco!
Great Start!! :thumbsup: I like your studies epecially the ones from Structure of Man......
Your character design for the contest also looks good.....work on it more.....
About the heads.....do you start with some construction of directly get into contour drawing?
Keep up the good work....
Ratul
Hi
I'm really glad you decided to start a sb here.
I was actually looking at your stuff at pixelbrush this morning and thinking you should focus on anatomy.
Good choice :thumbsup:
Check out the tutorials and workshops around the anatomy forum... there's a zillion things to find out there!

@Farchi
Thank you! I'll keep practicing :)
@rdsarna
I like "The Structure of Man" I'm stucked with it but i'll try to watch more videos.
For the head i start with a structure, a bit from Loomis and a bit from Riven Phoenix ehhe i have to improve drawing faces, you'll see on my last try some bad anatomy issues with the face lol
@NR43!
Hey! I watched your SB and i liked it really much, just i can't have much to say eheh
I've opened a SB there couse i need a place more focused on anatomy and this should be the right place ;)
Thanks for coming on my SB ;)
And now the last works with some anatomy problem on the faces...

What do you think i should do to train??
More figure from mind or just random poses from reference?
Does the 90 secs gesture pose from maniacs help in any way or no?

I see very few construction lines or marks on your drawings. It's a good idea to get the proportions spot on (correct) before spending alot of time rendering details and shading, otherwise you just get an error - filled shaded drawing which leaves you feeling that the drawing looks odd no matter how much time you spend shading and reshading.
Try browsing this artist's site:

And thks for dropping by my sketch book.

hey vincent! thanks for coming!
i always use some guidelines but i think i draw them bad lol i just erase almost everything of them. I think i've now to focus on forms and not on shading. I'll do more head study.
Now some random poses from posemaniacs, about 5 mins ore less each...someone really bad and someone not so bad lol

Hi Marco,
I like your posts, saw some really interesting stuff! :)
From what I have been told by concept artists and read so far, I think this is the 'procedure' for learning to draw (concept drawings):
1] Copy first (masters' work, from photos, from live) - train observational skills plus rendering skills plus for every piece you copy, a little of it enters your mind.
2] At the same time observe your environment, explore vaious media eg. comics, concept art books, see beauty around you. Watch movies and get ideas etc - These things are stored in your mind as you see them. Your mind then works as a filter (for what you have stored in it from 1] as well) for the moment when you need to create something out of your mind. Whatever comes out should be something unique, a combination of what you have seen and learned. Because your mind has already winnowed out stuff that you dun really understand or appreciate or like.
3] Understand how to construct figures proportionally correctly. Understand anatomy (which will takes years :D ) - Books by Loomis, Hogarth, Bridgeman are great help.
4] When you have done 1, 2, and 3, and keep doing them, eventually you will reach a stage when you will be able to create unique stuff that you want, that are aethestically pleasing, proportionally correct, and in a fast enough speed to meet clients' deadlines.
Everyone has different ways of learning, hence different opinions about how to approach it. Just to share with you how some people I know who draws really well think. Hope it helps you decide what next to do. :)

I like your drawings but you might consider drawing more general roughly then gradually build up detail like your doing with the skull study. You might be doing that but I can't see any construction lines on some of your character sketches. Keep it up.

@angelicvoice
Thanks for your tips! That is what i'm trying to do, i'm not doing bad things then. I'll practice more.
The third point will be really hard eheh
@muttonman
Thanks for coming! Yeah, i'll try to make simple drawing without shading so much and see what happen. I've made a try with 3 heads from the heads workshop.

Hi there TurbiX,
Try not to make perfect drawings, but concentrate on getting the form right first. Then you could continue with refining your work.
Don't be scared by the work of others but be inspired and motivated. Noone woke up a morning and started drawing well. It takes a lot of effort to get there.
So, good luck! :)

@rdsarna

i've made 3 finished painting with colors and a lot of random scribbles lol but that painting opened my mind about colors, i feel like i've really learned a lot doing this!

Really BEAUTIFUL work on the master study Marco!!
Can't wait to see the next step.
Concerning your gestures. I can really really recommend Glen Vilppu's Gesture DVD. It's not cheap but it's very informative.
Basically he talks about getting the flow of the action in the figure first and then thinking about volume.
plz post more :D

Thanks NR43 but Vilppu's DVD cost too much for me now eheh

During the week i've tried to use colored pencils and i loved it!

It seems you have nice control over your wacom than your pencil, the difference between the two are incredible. How are you sketching with your pencils? It seems that your proprotions are skewing in your pencil drawings, maybe your position when you draw?
I'm really digging your painting on head n.064!
take care,
